Using Windows 98 2E and Internet Explorer 6, I occasionally encounter a situation from initial bootup where the browser cannot open any web page and Outlook Express cannot successfully connect. Generally, a re-boot will restore proper operation.

I am wondering which file or files might cause this problem. I suspect it is corruption problem relating to winsock.dll, wsock.vxd, wsock32.vxd, or a similar file. The system acts as if there were no connection to the Internet, even though a good modem connection has been established.

Once, in the past, this problem occurred and I was unable to recover. A Windows re-install was the only solution I could apply. With backup copies of the files related to this problem, one should be able to replace the files in question with fresh copies and, thus, resolve the problem.

If anyone has knowledge on this subject or experience with the problem, I would be very pleased to hear their suggestions.

    Thanks in advance.

    Bob
