I cannot open Office (Word or Excel) attachments in Outlook. I am using MS Office 2010 on Windows 7. and MS Security Essentials. Get error messages including "check the file permissions" on Word and "make sure there is sufficient memory" on both Word and Excel.

Have you tried running Microsoft Office Diagnostics?

If that doesn't help, try repairing your Office installation.

I don't know what to do from your reply and reference information:Am I supposed to download "2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components "? I have tried to repair MS Office Home & Business 2010 but it won't let me. I am able to repair the two MS Office connectors.

The information I posted was merely to advise you that Microsoft Office Diagnostics was removed in Office 2010 and that the suggestion to run it in Post #2 is invalid.

In addition the URL posted in the thread I referred to is incorrect in that it refers to Office 2013 - the URL for Office 2010 is here.

I am not familiar with Office 2010 nor Outlook 2010 and can only suggest that you Google for Cannot open Office attachments in Outlook 2010. There are several hits which may help you to resolve your issue.

Another suggestion follows but there is no "Protected View" to select:
From your description , I understand that the file is corrupt and cannot be opened but can be opened elsewhere.
    Try the following steps:

    1. Open Outlook 2010.

    2. Click on File > Options.

    3. Select Trust Center > Trust center settings.

    4. Select Protected view.

    5. Uncheck all the options under Protected View > OK.

    6. Restart Outlook 2010 and try to open Outlook.

    7. Once you have been able to open the Outlook, save it with Office new format.

    8. Go to File > Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center settings -> Protected View

    9. Check all the options again under Protected View -> OK

    10. Restart Outlook 2010.

    Sincerely,
    Harry

Sevenforums is 100% safe according to WOT which I also use, but I suspect you are contemplating the Recommended Fix - steer well clear of it and the other 2 URL's. Seems like every forum site you visit these days has misleading downloads which often have no bearing on the main issue or subject.

I would see no issues involved in trying any of the solutions proposed in that thread.

That walkthrough would appear to be incorrect. With Office 2010 Protected View is dealt with through Word, Excel, etc. on an individual basis - see here

However, from what I have read your issue does not lie there, even though it may be worth a try. The error messages you posted are not compatible with Protected View

When you try to Repair Office what is the error message?

If you save attachments to a folder - do they open from there?

I totally agree with you on "Seems like every forum site you visit these days has misleading downloads" Consequently I have started to buy my software off-line at the local shop---perhaps I need to do the same for computer maintenance.
I have in the past received good specific direction help from Windows BBS and have contributed $ to that group. As you have noticed at my level of computer literacy I can't tell on the Internet when I am being lead astray. So I would like specific direction now and as you stated your unfamiliarity with Office 2010 is it possible to be directed to someone who is familiar with Office 2010? Let me know and if not I will have to look at buying help off-line.

When clicking on MS Office I get two options: Uninstall & Change. Choosing either gets me to "Do you want to allow...." "Yes" get me back to where I started and nothing happens.

I have saved a Word doc to my desk top but still can't open it. I have opened the doc in another computer and opened it with no difficulty----then sent it to my PC as an attachment to an email and can'y open it.

On the desktop - if you right click and select Open With - is MS Word an option? If so does that work?

When attempting to install "Fix it" I get the message "The installer has insufficient privileges.... Log on as administrator.... I am the only person using this computer.

That may be the case, but do you have administrative rights?

    Thanks for the clarification, Pete.

I, too, am unfamiliar with Office 2010, but I was thinking that the diagnostics tool was still available.
