    Hello and Help
I am at the 'a little knowledge is dangerous stage'
I have inadvertantely deleted something that has altered my jpg icons to something that looks like a text page with a large 'A' to one side. I can view jpg thumbnails but cannot open them. When I right click and then open, I get an error message; "not a valid win32 application. There is no option to change the programme.

Also, although it may not be connected, on my IE browser, when I go to 'tools>internet options' I do not get the usual menu giving 'temporary internet files/history/cookies etc.

In windows explorer find a jpg file. Click on it once to highlight it. Then hold the ctrl key down and right click on the file. In the menu choose open with. In the list of programs select the one you want to use to open jpg's, put a checkmark in the box next to the line that says always use this program to open this type of file and click ok. Hopefully that'll fix it for you.

Install Irfanview for Jpg files, it is a really good program for all images. You'll like it and it is free.
Run the Internet Explorer Repair Tool.
Go to Control Panel\Add Remove Programs, double click the IE entry, a window will pop up, choose the Repair Option. Reboot when prompted.

You have your *jpg associated with Fontview. Did this just happen. If so you can always restore registry backup. It seems to bea hot option for a fix, today! :D

Restart in dosmode and at the prompt:
    *type cd\ and hit enter
    *type scanreg /restore
*choose a dated backup that predates problem.

Although the previous re-association fix offered by Zander will still get you there.

For the IE Internet Options problem - do you have Spybot installed? If so there's a setting in the Immunize section which will prohibit anything from changing the settings in Internet Options...including you.

If it is a Spybot setting, uncheck the appropriate option referencing IE in the Immunize section, right-hand pane, at the bottom.

Thanks Zander, I've tried that. I don't get the list of programmes , I get "not a valid win32 application "

Thanks Mark 62, at ControlPanel/Add Remove Prpgrammes, I don't have an entry for IE much less a repair option. I'll try irfanview but i'd really like to fix the error I have made.

Thanks Goddez1, You've lost me though, I'm just a simple surfer.

Anymore suggestions, I know my sons friend will fix it in 2-3 clicks, but he thinks anyone over 40 should'nt be allowed near a keyboard.

digbyd--Zander's suggestion is the simplest, but I think there is one small glitch in it. You should hold down the Shift key (not Control) at the same time you right click on the highlighted .jpg file. Then you will get the option Open With.... When you click on that (not Open) you will get the list of programs from which you chose (highlight) one to open .jpg files. (As Zander said, you then check the box at the bottom "Always use this program..." and click OK.) You should chose a graphics editor. The standard is Iexplore, but you can chose others such as Irfanview (i_view32) if it is installed.

And just in case you need to know about win98's automatic backups of your system files such as your registry. Trust me, this information will come in handy:

    http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/start-145.shtml

This should explain why I suggested this as an alternative.

I also, do hope Zander/Jim's instructions will work for you.

Thanks for your help everyone, I've done as you suggested, and I know the commands you are referring to. However, The "open with" window/dialogue box (whatever) that I am familiar with does not appear. All I get is " "not a valid win32 application ".
It appears I have really ******* it up.

    Any more offers, please

Here's a regpatch that should fix any registry association problem you have with jpgs. Download it to the desktop and then double click to merge to the registry (confirm when prompted). Afterwards you can simply delete it if you wish.

Mind if I ask if you have scanned for a virus? Invalid win32 app and jpg funny business are prime signs of virus infection. You may be fine but I'd run a scan using the latest dat file just to be on the safe side.

At last, success. I managed to find the option "open with ". It only works (on my system) when you Right Click and hold, then press shift, then release Right Click. I've also downloaded
" ifranview" which does work better than iexplore.

Thanks once again everyone, for all your help

I just have to sort my "internet options" problem now.

    I will probably be back

    Bye!

digbyd--Thanks for posting back. Glad to hear the good news!!
Concerning your IE problem. Do you run SpybotS&D? I do not, but I believe (somewhere in the Immunize section, perhaps) there is a setting which locks changes to 'temporary internet files/history/cookies etc.'
    Alternatively you can consider this.

Go to Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Information Tool. In System Information Tool, go to the toolbar at Tools\Internet Explorer Repair Tool.
