Hi, Can someone help. My daughter has a new computer and now it won't log onto the internet through my wireless router. It used to but now doesn't. The computer says it is connected to the router but when I open the browser unable to connect comes up (using Firefox). Does the same with Internet Explorer. We are using Windows 7. Why would the computer appear connected to the router but no go??? Beats me and I have tried everything I can think off.
    Please help...

Hi I just had my daughter plug into the LAN and she still couldn't log into the internet. Isn't there a list of things to double check and correct that I could try. How do you actually narrow it down to the issue, what are the steps I need to take?

Right click on the line of bars in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and first click on Open Network and Sharing Center. Just below the diagram there should be a line saying View Your Active Networks, click on Connect or Disconnect opposite. You should then be given a list of one or more available networks, click on the one you want and then click on connect.

Secondly, from right clicking on the bars, select Troubleshoot Problems and report back with the results.

    Hi Mark,

I tried the right hand side line of bars and tried to connect to my network but it wouldn't connect. I then tried second option and it reported Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem. I tried changing my SSID, encryption, password etc on wireless and that didn't help at all. There has to be a logical reason why it doesn't work and I am determined to find out what it is, but seem to have tried all the obvious things - HELP!!

So when you opened the Network and Sharing Center and you see the diagram that shows your PC, a house and a globe are there any red crosses on the lines between.

Two other things you can try. Somewhere on your router ther will be a reset button, this is usually just a small hole that you have to push a piece of wire through to trigger the switch (you need to press and hold for at least 5 seconds with the power on), this will reset the router to default. Once done reboot the PC and see if the connection is made.

Second. On the PC, go into Device Manager, click on the > next to Network adapters. Then you should see your wireless adapter right click and select properties. Click on the driver tab and select Uninstall Driver. After it is uninstalled reboot and you should see a pop up saying it has installed the driver. Try again for the connection.

In your next reply please add the make and model number of the PC and the router.

If nothing has improved please follow this instruction.

A couple more thoughts, did the loss of connection on your daughters PC just suddenly happen. If so was anything changed at the same time this occured.

Do you have other PC's in the house that are working OK on the wireless network or could you quickly borrow another PC just to see if another PC will connect.

Hi Mark, many thanks for your informative help so far.
Yes in the Network Sharing Centre I have Danielles PC a line, a RED X a line, and Internet.
I put cmd in search box and it immediately opened the DOS window and prompt c:\Users\Danielle's> so I entered in the command you gave without the underscored IP and it came back access denied. So I can't get that report you needed. The Laptop is an HP Pavilion Entertainment Centre DV6-2110AX and we are running Windows 7 Home edition.

    regards Paul

Sounds like you missed a bit. As you type cmd in the search box a box will open just above it, you should see cmd.exe listed, you have to right click on that and select "Run as Administrator" then enter the command at the command prompt and it should produce the .txt report and save it on the C drive.

Have you tried resetting the router?

Thanks for that but I need to get some information on the router, you have not told me the make and model number which I asked for in post 7 and please also answer my questions in post 8.

The router is not configured properly, if you have your own set of instructions you could configure it yourself but for me to give clear instructions I need the details of it. Is the router your own or was it provided by the ISP?

Please try not to miss any of my questions as that just slows down the resolution:).

You will have been informed, as I was, that this thread was edited by admin and the last few posts were lost. It's now missing the details you supplied for the router and the link I supplied with the instructions for setting it up.

As in my last post I suggested you tried the re-configuration of the router from your own instructions. If you need more guidance please let me have the router details again.

As the wireless signal is unavailable to more than one PC the fault points to the router and I would speculate that if the connection is still unobtainable after re-configuring that the router will need to be replaced.

See what happens after re-configuring the router and then report back.

Another thing I had mentioned was if you have a cordless phone near to the router, that could be the cause of the problem.

Hi Mark, The router is a Dynalink RTA1025W. If you could provide the link that would be great. I will try re-configuring first from your instructions/link. Cordless phone is about 3 meters away.

The first page on this link provides a further link to new firmware for Australia and New Zealand, not sure where you live so that may not apply to you. If you do live in one of those areas this update may help. Please read all the warnings before downloading and installing.

From this link click on "site map" at the bottom of the page and then scroll down the list to find the instructions for your series of router.

    http://www.dynalink.co.nz/asset-listings/firmware-listing?firmware_id=18165

That cordless phone may be a problem but I'm guessing if you have always had it in the same position with the wireless working then there should be nothing to worry about.

Hi Mark, I gave up and told my daughter to take it back to the computer shop. Nothing worked and I had two other wireless laptops using the same router and settings and they worked fine after is re-confiured router. She restored the computer to a previous restore point and it worked. I have NO idea why but at least it's working now. Just want to say thanks for your help it is very much appreciated the time you put in to try and help us out. Have a great XMAS to you and yours.

A confusing resolution but glad to hear its working again. A setting must have changed which the restore fixed:) Try the ipconfig command from post 5 and see what has changed. I am sure there should have been more details under the Wireless Network configuration and that there would normally only be one.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.
