I am trying to log into my school's WebCT Blackboard site and I can on one computer here but not on another. The failed machine tells me that my UN or PW is wrong and that I have an unsupported browser.

    • They are both running IE8 with the same updates on XPP - SP3
    • I have cleared history, form data, passwords etc and that didn't help
    • I then reset settings and that was no help either
    • I uninstalled IE8 which reverted me back to IE6 - no joy here
    • I tried Firefox and I still cannot log in from this one machine
    • I updated Java - no luck
    • I turned off the firewall - nadda
    • disabled the AV real time monitoring - no
    • disabled the popup blocker -
Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?
    Thanks in advance

Hmm, I thought the above would have surely fixed the issue. Generally just being temp files. But oh well.

When you state you uninstalled your Internet security program, which program are you using exactly? I ask this because programs like Norton and AVG really require the Removal Tool to confirm they are uninstalled, Here's Norton and here's AVG.

Are you running the latest Service Pack for your Windows version?
Just right click on My Computer > Properties. and then let me know your OS and Service Pack installed (actually just checked your specs, you are running Windows7 64Bit)
    edit:
Oh just read through again. You have already stated you are running XP SP3

    Try Start > Run > services.msc > ok
Maximize the Services Window that eventually opens
Scroll down to and double click on Protected Storage
Confirm it is in Automatic and Started

I'd like to request a HijackThis log, but I'm unsure if that is allowed here

    I don't believe that's the issue
Especially since you have used IE anyway (I hope)

I think its Hosts or some Internet Setting or possibly Malware related
I also think you need to confirm all Windows Security Updates and even Java Updates

Regarding the log... Um I have to step out for a couple of hours, but I'm happy to go through it completely. Just bad timing sorry.
Edit, oh you posted the log already - I'll be quick!

Thanks Kim - All updates are there - Windows and Java as it depends on Java

I have to step out for a couple of hours as well so I can check when I return

I am thinking that a reformat / reinstall might just solve all my woes and not waste other kind people's valuable time. I can do that in about an hour in the morning and be done with it - but it is a pain

I shall look for your HJT findings

    Sorry for double post.

Your log looks clean, but I notice you are connecting through wireless have you tried just using ethernet (even just to test it)

By the way all the "file missing" entries can be selected and then Fixed
Also please try Safe Mode with Networking to test that site

I must go, but please reply back. Also I wonder if your IP was banned from the server, we could do a TraceRt to confirm, anyway must go...

    edit:

    Actually I'd do SFC /ScanNow before Re-install

The machine was hard wired to the network and has been all the time.

Tried all of your suggestions without success. The other machine that I successfully connected with is also on my network. I also took it to a friend's house and didn't connect there either so the IP address isn't the issue.

In the interest of time, I have gone ahead and backed up. I am just about to reformat and do a fresh install of XPP. If it doesn't work then I have no idea what I will do.

Thanks for your efforts - I'll post back after the install

Look this is going to sound a bit strange, but its very quick (and it might fix it)

    Please do a CheckDisk

    Start > Run > chkdsk /r > ok > Y > Restart

    Note: one space after chkdsk

Then test again. I hope I mad e the post in time to try this.

ps You really should have given me at least 30mins to respond, there's always another option

Disk is clean - didn't fix the issue

I really don't mind reformatting - usually do it every 18 months or so

    Then best to format then
And by the way, don't format > Remove the Partition instead, as Windows will automatically create a new partition (on an non-partitioned drive) and format the drive to NTFS automatically during Windows Setup

Here's the guide for that ;)

Microsoft's Windows XP Professional Clean Install step by step (* Including Delete Partition)
    http://www.windowsxpprofessional.windowsreinstall.com/sp2sp3installxpcdoldhdd/indexfullpage.htm
    * Warning deleting the Partition will remove all User data and Windows system files
