    Hi,
I am having trouble with a Microsoft update. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Vista sp2 32 bit

    Microsoft update fails to install—
    -----------
Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2468871)
    Download size: 18.9 MB
You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.
    Update type: Recommended
Install this update to resolve issues in Microsoft .NET Framework 4. For a complete listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the associated Microsoft Knowledge Base article for more information. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
    ------------------
    Attempts at solution:

    1. I restarted many times, and the update does not install.

    2. I installed through Windows Update multiple times in control panel, resulting in: Failed, code 66A—unknown error.

    3. I ran the trouble shooter unsuccessfully.

    4. I ran a repair uninstall/fix at control panel/programs, through right click on:
Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 SP1 (successfully restored to original state)
    and
Microsoft .NET framework 4 Client Profile (I was told it is already removed)
    and
Microsoft .NET framework 4.5.1 (successful repair)
    in this order.
These are the only Microsoft .NET items in my Programs folder.

I restarted. Again, Widows Update wants to install .NET 4. Failed, code 66A—unknown error.

    5. I downloaded at Microsoft website (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2468871)
Update for .NET framework 4 KB2468871
    NDP40-KB2468871-v2-x86.exe—saved, then ran as administrator
Fails: "NDP40-KB2468871-v2 does not apply or is blocked by another condition on your computerâ€

    -----------------
Here are most recent previous successful installs. I wonder if one of these is blocking the most recent NET 4?
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB2916036), Installation date: ‎2/‎12/‎2014 3:13 AM, Installation status: Successful

I have seen this problem several times. Uninstall ALL the .NET framework and then check for updates and they should all install this time. May take a couple of times checking for updates.

That or if you don't have something on your PC requiring it, don't worry about it.

    success

    Dear MrBill,
That did it. I had to mess around a bit with the order of reinstalling elements, but eventually it worked. It seems I did not need the update that was giving me trouble.
    Thanks very much.
