Okay, consider this a challenge to your computer knowledge. What you're about to read is a giant mess, and I doubt anyone will be able to fix it. I've looked all over the place for help, and I've only made my situation worse.

My laptop is a Windows Vista, Inspiron 1525 model. 2 GB ram. 32-bit operating system. Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU.

It all started when I needed to update iTunes. I wanted to update it to the 9.1 version, so I downloaded the 93mb update and started the installation/update. Everything was going perfectly fine, and then at the end it came up with the error:

"A newer version of QuickTime is already installed. This installation cannot proceed while the newer version of QuickTime is installed. "

After that, it came up with a second message:

"The installation of QuickTime did not complete successfully. iTunes requires QuickTime. "

After this I was thinking, "What the hell?? ". It says a newer version is already installed, then it says it cannot complete the installation successfully. So after that, I decided to uninstall QuickTime, and then use the update again. I went to control panel, found QuickTime, and clicked Uninstall. The same error came up:

"A newer version of QuickTime is already installed. This installation cannot proceed while the newer version of QuickTime is installed. "

Now I was starting to get annoyed, because I'd clicked Uninstall, and it said it couldn't install. So after this I decided to try and uninstall iTunes. I uninstalled iTunes easily, and then tried the update again, and once again it failed. Then I tried uninstalling QuickTime, and again it failed, all with the same error. Then I posted my problem up on a different site, and one person said to use a program called "Revo Uninstaller Pro ".

I downloaded the program, and used it to delete all files related to 'QuickTime' - it deleted thousands of files and folders, completely erasing everything to do with QuickTime. I couldn't even find anything with that name in the search program. Feeling satisfied, I tried the update again and the same error came up. It still thought there was a newer version, even when nothing with the name of QuickTime was on the computer.

By that time I was so annoyed that I'd completely given up, and decided to go back in time. I used the System Restore. I went back a day or two, before I'd downloaded the update or changed anything. It took ages, and even the system restore hasn't made any difference at all. After that I downloaded the 'stand-alone' QuickTime, but that didn't work either. Now here I am, I can't get rid of QuickTime, I can't install it, and I can't install iTunes because of QuickTime.

Please help me, if anyone can solve this problem they are an absolute genius, because no other website or person has been able to =(

Hi, it would help if you told us what your OS was and enter your system details. Neil.
