The instructions I found started with "Go to 'My Computer,' and find '\windows\folder.' "

No can do. There doesn't seem to be a "My Computer" with Vista?? I remember it with IE, but it is MIA now... If I click on "Computer," I find recovery and OS and stuff like that. Nothing with a windows folder there...

My desktop was a perfectly beautiful photo. Wish I hadn't decided to change it. I made a mess. :( Plus, I have no idea where my original went.

Hi noclue, I am not entirely sure what you are trying to achive but if you just want to change your Desktop Background, that is easy in Vista.

Choosing a Windows Vista Background: right click at an empty spot on your desktop, in the dialog box that appears click Personalize in the next page second from top select "Desktop Background" and you have a selection of backgrounds at your disposal.

Choosing your own picture as background:
go to "Documents" > Pictures pick any photo that you like of what you have installed on your PC right-click on the chosen picture and select " Set as Desktop Background "

Thanks for writing, hawk22. The thing is, when I go to "My Pictures" or "My Documents," all I find are photos I've downloaded from my camera. The photo I was using originally came from Google images, but once I replaced it with the current offending image, I can no longer find the original photo.

Is there a special place for desktop stuff? Or "appearance," maybe?

if you can remember what extension that image had for example: .bmp or .jpeg you can do a search for it.
On the other hand you can Google since it was a Google Image just enter in your Google search Desktop Images and you will find hundreds of google desktop images and who knows you might just find your missing beauty.
    Good luck.

It seems like I accidentally came across it one day, hidden away by itself in a logical place, but logic and I are not exactly on the best of terms. I think I did find it on Google images, so if I can just remember the search terms I used....
