    WINDOWS XP IE8

I cannot get into my IE explorer (8) when clicking on my desktop icon.I think I have deleted something I should'nt have when trying to correct it.

Have no internet at all now on main computer (this is from laptop) It is not showing in add/remove programmes so I tried rev uninstaller and it was not showing on there either .Obviously cannot re download it because I cannot get into Internet.

This might be of some help..when I click on the icon from start menu this pop up comes up:-

    Win cannot find http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Linkid=106440

Am really worried as I use the main computer regularly.

What happens when you run the MS Fixit? Is this the only page that does this?
Deleted something how? Using a program? If so, which one?

Hi Mr Bill many thanks for fast response.

1.Ran Mr Fix it and under the add ons it fixed one item.. a Java Plug in ss helper and under Windows Display Quality it said:- Display settings are not optimized and was not fixed.

2.I can get into other pages i.e. Outlook Express - Microsoft WordFoxit Reader .

    3. I tried to delete IE through add & remove programs thinking that I could redownload it and solve problem but this messge came up:-

An error has occurred in the program during initialization,if this problem continues contact administrator. error code Ox80070715

Did contact Microsoft but could not afford the price they were charging.

Those pages don't really have anything to do with IE. Those are seperate programs that have nothing to do with IE. Try disableing all your add-ons in IE and see if that helps. Tools/Manage Add-Ons. If it does, then go back and enable them one at a time to find the culpert. Java should be disabled anyways.

When you open up IE, and it gives you what it does, click in the search box and type in www.google.com and see what happens.

You didn't answer what program you used to delete/remove stuff with.

Hi Snowdrop. Adding to what Bill said, do you have any other Internet browsers that you can use to try and get online?

Did you make any recent changes to the computer before this issue started happening?

If you can't access google through Internet Explorer try this, click Start< All Programs< Accessories< Command Prompt. When Command Prompt opens type ping google.com. After the ping process finishes you should see that it sent 4 packets and hopefully it says that it received the 4 packets. This will confirm that your Internet connection is working.

Uh oh. You should never ever go into the registry and start deleting keys and values if you don't know what you are doing. You could easily hose your OS by deleting the wrong key and thats probably part of the reason why IE8 isn't working properly.

Mr Bill cannot do any of the things you have suggested because I cannot get into IE and do not have any other browsers downloaded to work with.

Do you have the Win XP disc for your system? If so, you could try a system repair.

Or you could try this first.

    1. Open My Computer by double-clicking on the icon on the desktop.

    2. Right-click on the drive letter that you wish to check for errors (usually C:) and click on the Properties menu item.

    3. Choose the "Tools" tab and click on the Check Now... button.

    4. Two options are available in the next window:
•Automatically fix file system errors will correct many file system errors detected. This is highly recommended.

•Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors will perform a search for areas of the hard drive that may be damaged or unusable. If found, this tool will mark those areas as "bad" and prevent your computer from using them in the future. This is a very useful feature but may extend the scan time as much as a few hours.

Hope that it works. Sometimes we have to try things by shooting in the dark. Some work and some don't. I have see something work for somebody that would not work for another person. I know that all PC's are different but somethimes you never know.

    Keep us updated.

Tried resetting IE settings but when i put the command in run it does not work nothing comes up.
Tried downloading IE8 from this laptop but it will not let me do it.
Arie tried System restore a few times was the first thing I tried but now it will not let me restore before 12th Feb 2013 tried to create a restore point but it will not accept it.

I really think I am going to have to get an expert in as am now worried I might cause more problems trying to repair it myself. I cannot thank you all enough for all the help you have given.I have learnt that it is my own fault for tampering with regedit and promise I will never do that again!

Can you elaborate? What happens when you try downloading IE8 on the other computer?

Thats good that you have learned from your mistakes. We all make mistakes but its important that you gain experience and knowledge by what not to do again. Personally I am not ready to give up on trying to fix this problem yet. If you are comfortable with trying to fix this problem yourself then I can offer you a few more suggestions otherwise you probably will have to get a local computer tech to try fix your computer in person. Its up to you with how you want to proceed at this point.

Grateful thanks to all of you for all the help and advice you gave me.It has not all been wasted because I will never tamper with registry again.

Do I tick this post as solved or just leave it alone?

    Snowdrop:

When you do get it fixed, I'd strongly recommend getting a second browser as an alternative to IE. I have Google Chrome as an alternate (just my personal choice) but Firefox or Ubuntu could also be used.

I find IE to be a pain in the private parts quite regularly, and I've used Chrome as a way to determine if I still have an internet capability. This morning neither of them would start. I had to reboot three times before they worked. In each case, Windows Task Manager's "applications" list showed only a very small load had occurred.

Incidentally, I recently was given access to one of those "see where all the airplanes are" programs and it won't even run on IE. If anyone is interested it's at flightradar24.com and is freeware.
