There are some FTP sites that I cannot download files from. After clicking on the link, the page is blank and said DONE in the Status Bar, nor does it prompt for Save to Location. In general, all cnet.com download links are okay, but sites like Roxio's just does not happen. Why?

    Hiya

To get the Save As to come up all the time, try this.

Tools | Internet Options. Advamced Tab. Look for Enable Instal on Demand under Browsing. Untick that. Apply and OK.

As to the reason why its not downloading, some ftp sites require you to Rightclick and choose Save As...

Thanks for the tip. However, it did not work. I did exactly as instructed. Then I tried to use right click, Save Target as.., the file download windows pops up, but it sort of just hangs there, going no where. Time left : download to: Transfer Rate, are all blank. I tried on ftp.ita.sel.sony.com, after clicking on Accept (agreement), nothing happens.

Everytime this happens, I use Netscape to download and save, no trouble at all. So what is the cause of such problem? No ftp sites.

Got any kind of "pop-up stopper" installed? They can cause that kind of problem.

Nope. Nothing like that. I even tried closing ZoneAlarm, no change. Come to think of it, last time I had the same problem was in Win98 SE, IE 5.5. I used Repair (IE ) to correct the same problem. that was caused by Gator ware , I think, GodZilla, something like that. But that has been erased.

You could try opening a command prompt and running SFC /SCANNOW. You'll need your XP cd.

    Hiya

See you mentioned Spyware. Go here and download AddAware www.lavasoftusa.org
Instal and run, ensuring that Deep Registry Scan is enabled. Remove all except any references to Web3000 or new.net. If you're unsure, copy/paste the list.

Whilst you're there, download RefUpdate. Install and run to get the latest updates.

Thank you for the tip on Adaware. I didn't realize I still had so much Gator ****.

Still trying to fix my ftp connection problem, though.

    Hiya

You say you have Gator. I assumed you removed it via AddRemove.

Anyway, you also said that the last time it was fixed was when you did a repair. IE6 has no repair, and you can't go back to 5.5 with XP.
Have you emptied your Tempory Internet Files?
Tools | Internet Options. General tab, under Delete Files, delete offline content.

Also, have you done a defrag?

    Regards

    IE6 has no repair,

Does this apply just to XP ?

I have WIn98/IE6 and Repair is available via Control Panel add/Remove. Or by running IE6Setup.exe.

I usually run it about once a week. Needed or not. It is sometimes surprising what it fixes.

From what I have seen, XP has version 6 only, which you cannot repair, but it is thought that version 6 may not have a repair. Can you confirm that you have the version 6?

Go to Help | About and post the full version number.

    Thanks

    Mine shows version 6.0.2600.0000

I also have the full set of downloaded files on my HD. If that makes a difference or not I do not know.

Offline content has been deleted. As for defrag, man, I need to wait till bed time to do it. It takes too long.

Are you running DA? (Download Accelerator) I have had problems with some FTP sites using DA.
Some sites tell you to disable DA to successfully download.

My problem has just become problemS! Now i can't get to a lot of the linked pages, the windows pops up but the page is blank. From Outlook Express, I can't get to the URL links in the e-mail, either.

So, instead of trying to fix the problem, I am going to remove IE6 and re-install. Simple enough.

Well, XP does not remove IE 6, it only removes the icon on Desktop.

I tried the registry fix. Not working, either. Right now, I am not even worrying about the FTP connection at all. I just want IE6 to behave correctly. Anything else for me to try? I really want to avoid going through installing XP again.

Okay, I used XP's System Restore to go back to a week ago. Glad to report that at least now IE 6 is loading new pages/windows normally. All links are displayed correctly without any errors. So now the question is still - how to fix FTP download problem.

I tried to Registry editing tip again, and it didn't work.
