    Hi,
I have been having computer problems with this Dell computer running Windows ME and using MSN as my service provider.

I went to the Windows Update and tried to download and installed the IE 6 Service Pack 1, and then went to bed because it was late. When I got up later I thought it was done. It told me to restart the computer but I just turned it off instead. The next morning turned on the computer but it had problems and had to be shut down so I never have installed it. It keeps telling me that I need to run setup again but it keeps doing the same thing.

Now I decided to run Windows Update again and try to download it. When I do, it starts the download and then stops with this error message: "A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You need to restart your computer to complete the installation before running Internet Exp. Setup. Setup will now close. "

If I try this "Setup" never will install.

I restart and it returns to my desktop. I still have Version 5.50, 4134,0100 on the computer.

My question is "How can I get the first IE6Setup completely off my computer, so I can start fresh again?

Also, is it possible to find IE6 on a CD so I don't have to spend hours trying to download it?

    Thank you.

    Jean

P.S. For your information I started out writing to the ME support about an Adobe Acrobat problem and now things have gone from bad to worse.

Zander, Thanks for answering me so promptly.

I have gone to both pages that were recommended but nothing seems to work out.

First RESOLUTION it said to resolve this issue if Restarting Windows does not load IE6, "Rename the Wininit.ini file, restart the computer, and then run Internet Explorer Setup again." I have searched the hard drive for Wininit.ini several times and there is no such file. All I have is: wininit.exe, winnit.bak and wininitlog.old so I can't even do a rename. I can't figure out how to get in DOS mode from Windows ME. I have tried everything but can't get into the DOS mode.

I even tried this: Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
(I have two Session Managers listed.)
The first SessionManager has two folders "Environment and Power" - Nothing in there that says "PendingFileRenameOperations" to delete.

The second Session Manager has many folders, AppCompatiblility, AppPatches, CheckBadApps,CheckBadApps400, CheckVerDlls, Enviromment, HackingFiles, Known16DLLs, & Known DLLs.
There is no PendingFileRenameOperations values to DELETE.

I did delete the following keys that they told me to do in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

and deleted temp and temp. internet files.

I then decided to go on and try to download IE 6 again. It started and then I got the following message:
Installation Incomplete, not all components were installed.
    Internet Explorer 6 Web Browser
    Offiline Browsing Pack
    Browser Customizations
    Advanced Authoring
    Vector Graphics Rendering (VML)

It told me to restart. When I restart IE starts working on setup and then lets me know again that certain components are missing. Then it tells me to RESTART. and

How can I get the missing components or how can I get rid of IE and start all over.?

    Thanks.

    Jean

This side of the pond most computer mags seem to have at least a couple of CD's from ISP's enclosed - these have IE on them :)

larsonjean--I have never seen an IE CD offered in a magazine on the left side of the pond, but I think it is on the CD's you get in the supermarket, etc. for AOL or Earthlink. I think I would try to find the Earthlink one, since I am not sure if you can unscramble the IE on the AOL one from the AOL proprietary shell. The Earthlink CD is usually available at Office Max. Free.

This link applies to ME and IE 6 specifically.

Thanks to all who helped me with this problem.

Today I talked to Dell and we reformatted the computer and re-installed all the software. I have Internet Explorer 6 again and all seems to be working fine.

    Thanks again.
