I loaded, tried and then uninstalled "Download Accelerator Plus" using the included" uninstall" program. But this has left something giving an error "cannot find Download Accelerator" every time I try to use my old download proogram. I have reset my Automation Protocols in the Registry as suggested in this forum but this doesn't cure the problem.
    Any ideas?
    David

Track down and delete any orphaned DAP registry entries and then run the IE Repair Tool.

    Cannot download anything ......................................

Thanks Brett. I used Norton Clean Sweep to remove registry entries that were not cross-referenced and then re-booted to clear the memory. But I still get "cannot find download accelerator ". How can I erase the unwanted entry?

Have you run the IE Repair Tool? Have a look in MSCONFIG too and see whether there are any DAP related startup items.

    Still cannot download .........................

No luck. My CONFIG.SYS makes no reference to DAP. But where do I find the IE 'repair' tool?

Start - Settings - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - MS Internet Explorer and Tools (double-click this entry) - Repair.

Cannot download ......- where do I find 'repair'?

You've lost me there Brett. When I get to 'add or remove programs' all I get is a list of installed progs - but where is 'repair'?

'Repair' doesn't do it. How can I contact the makers of DAP?

I found REPAIR (in precisely the way you told me to! Thanks) but this didn't do the trick. How do I contact the makers of DAP? They haven't got a proper 'help' site. Or have they?

Perhaps straying off topic? But isn't DAP still a spyware/browser helper? Perhaps you need BHO Cop to rid yourself of it?

    As a suggestion.

IF you are running Win98 FE or SE. ( not sure this will work in ME )

Just before installing the new software.

Go to the C:\Windows\sysback folder up and delete the two OLDEST Dated rb00x.cab files.

Make sure the C:\Windows\Temp folder is empty. ( this quite often gets forgoten. )

Check the Start/Programs/Startup folder for any reference to the program. If any exist delete them. If running you may need to use Cntrl-Alt-Del to close it.

Run Scanregw and allow it to make a new backup of the Registry.

Install software. If no good, just boot to the Command Prompt at boot up, Run scanreg /restore using the latest backup.

And POOF !! 95% of the time the new sofware references will be gone from the Registry, System.ini and Win.ini. And then you can usually delete the folder for same.

Scanreg and Scanreg /restore is one of the few great ideas that Microsoft came up with.

Is an uninstalled DAP only a problem with Netscape 6?

I normally use Netscape 6 as my browser and was using this when I installed DAP. After uninstalling it, my NS6 cannot download anything because of residual DAP components (where?). But I now find I CAN dowload things using IE or with Netscape 4.6. So is this a problem of incompatability? Anyone else used DAP with NS6?

I do not know about DAP as I have never found that type of software to be of any use. In fact I use VERY LITTLE 3rd party software.

OK. It is * POSSIBLE * that DAP either overwrites some NS files and/or may remove some when un-installed.

This little nasty procedure is followed quite often ( way too often ) by 3rd party software.

If this is the case my suggestion will not make ALL repairs as it only handles references ( pointers or keys what ever you want to call them ) to files not the files themselves. It does not replace or remove any bad files. I guess that is where ME System restore would be better.

The worst part is that a lot 3rd party software may not even be written for NS.

    residual DAP components (where?).

That is a very good question.

But it appears now that this might get more help if it were in the Netscape forum.

Ramona would probably have it repaired in about 30 seconds.

Yes. No surprises, but maybe because of Zone Alarm and Norton Anti-virus?

What about BHO Cop then? I would have thought either one of them would have cleaned it up?

I agree on getting help from "Ramona ", she knows Ntescape very well. My suspicions are the call to "DAP' is coming from within netscape. Netscape now associates download with "DAP ". Will have to reassociate another download program to replace it. But definintly wait for Ramona's reply.
