General description of OS and apps:
WinXP SP1, Office 2K3 w/OneNote and FrontPage, Kerio Firewall, SpyBot S&D Resident, Maxthon browser, AVG7

Without notice, I lost ability to Copy/Paste, Drag/Drop and cannot access Properties in Services.msc. I can access Services Properties using pserv.cpl (see http://p-nand-q.com/e/pserv.html ) There may be other undetected anomolies.

I have re-installed the OS and all apps twice - problem recurred each time. The second time, the last app suite installed was MS Office 2K3, with OneNote the last of these. The initial problem occurence did not seem to be related to apps, since all apps had been installed for some time prior.

AVG7 scan is negative, Panda Online scan is negative. Registry looks OK, but I do not know what I am looking for. Web searches tend to return application level related issues, nothing like this.

I am not a novice user - I am rather advanced and stuck! Re-install of OS and apps takes between 10 and 12 hours and does not seem to help.

    Suggestions, please.

    Welcome to Windows BBS.

Repair install, format & clean install, what?

Using a regular XP CD or one of the OEM 'recovery disk' things?

    Slipstream

Slipstreamed install. The same install file set that I have been using for almost two years - only updated drivers and some replaced Win apps (notepad, wordpad, char map, calc). The twelve hours includes Office, VB6PageMAker, Photoshop etc., updates, hotfixes, etc.

None of the software is new other than MS Office 2k3, Kerio 4.

I might be experiencing troubles stemming from TweakUI vs. XP updates? Just guessing at this point.

Check if RPC (Remote Procedure Call) service is running - at least problems with Copy/Paste/Drag&Drop are usually related to this.

    Yes, but...

    C:\XP\system32\svchost -k rpcss
    The command line for RPC

    Started, Automatic and Shared

HOwever, I notice the service is not allowed to interact with Desktop.
If the post does not recv a reply within the next 30-60 minutes, I am going to check it to ALLOW interact w/ desktop. If I vanish from this BBS for twelve hours or so, it means that I should NOT have checked ALLOW. :)

Also, RPC Locator is not running, and is set to Manual

Also try the "This Account" option. That's what my RPC is set on. Edit: I just double checked, the setting you have is the Default. As for the RPC Locator, Manual is fine on that since that's the Default.

I don't think this is your problem. Have you tried running SFC /scannow?

Maybe even install SP2 for effect.

Is problem present in Safe Mode?

Problem exists in safe mode. Install of SP2 has caused "issues" in the past, primarily with my former version of Kerio Firewall - I have since upgraded to Ver 4 (from 2.1.5) Right now, I cannot recall my the exact cause of my decline of XP2

SFC is proving problematic - I have replaced some of the MS apps with IMO better apps. SFC is freaking out! Where is SFC referencing for the "original" - if from my install file set ..\i386 then I should be OK, but SFC is bogging me down with "Please insert CD "

I like my slipstream install - I keep virtually all of the files normally found under C:\Documents and Settings on a separate drive (no overwrites on re-install). Historically no problem - I am searching the KB for issues relating to MS Office 2k3 since this is the only new app suite.

I am about to apply SP2 - I will even use the MS provided SP2 CD I got in the mail today

SFC is smart and tracks all installs, updates, and patches. Therefore, it gets the needed files from any of several sources, as it see fit, based on your system status and the file Authentication Signature. If it is continually asking for the CD, that's a good sign there were problems with corrupt or missing files. You can check in the Eventviewer when SFC completes to see what was changed. It's possible that your slipstream CD may be flawed or going south. Perhaps try installing with your original MS CD. Then install SP2.

BTW, if you want to prevent having to furnish the original CD, you can copy the i386 folder from it to your HD. We just had a thread about that recently.
