I have an acer laptop with XP Home on it. My son got a virus on it and it would not boot. I took out the hard drive and plugged it into a desktop and ran the Microsoft Malicious Software Tool on it. And put it back into the laptop.

It now will boot up to "loading user settings" which it does but then stops with background but no icons or lower start button.

When I try to log on as Administrator it will not let me. It says something like access restricted. So I cannot set up a new user account.

I have an Acer recovery disk but this only erases the hard drive and does a clean install.

I can go into safe mode but I do not know what to do once I get there. I get a black screen with "Safe Mode" in the corners.

There were files that were infected in the restore points so I have not tried that.

    Thank you

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

I suspect that the computer is still infected and expert help is required so I have moved this thread to the Malware & Virus Removal forum.
You are not fully in Safe Mode - you should see the desktop, etc albeit with much larger icons and be able to use the computer.

While you are waiting for one of our trained analysts to look over your thread I would put the drive back into the desktop and copy off all your important data.

Using the Recovery disk may turn out to be the best option.

I did copy off all the important data, but I wanted to keep everything the way it was if I could
