In the past week, I have tried to download two different programs, Windows Live Toolbar and iTunes. With both download attempts, I got the error message listed above. With the Windows Live Toolbar download attempt, I also got the error code hr: 0x80070643. A query on the Windows Live Help forum has gotten no response. I really hope someone here can help as I am afraid something must have happened to the folder where my downloaded applications are supposed to go. If so, how do I fix it?

Hi shotzel. You have to take ownership of the Application Data folder in your user profile. The path of the folder is C:/Documents and Settings/User Name/Application Data. Follow these instructions on how to take ownership of a folder, How to take ownership of a folder in Windows Vista/7.

Once thats done download the installation file that you want to install and right click it and hit run as administrator. Hopefully Itunes and the Windows Live Toolbar will install normally now.

Thanks, Evan. My folders do not follow that path. My AppData folder is right under my username under Users. I made sure my username was the owner, but I still cannot access the folder.

So you are stil denied access to that folder? Hmm interesting. Try this, open My Computer and browse to C:/Users/Your User Name. Right click Your User name folder and take ownership of the entire folder. Now see if you can access the AppData folder in your profile.

No dice. It says some program is preventing access to the folder. I have no other programs open as I have to close them to do the installation.

Have you tried right clicking on the program that you want to install and clicking Run as administrator? Do you still get the same error message?

My UAC is turned off. When I follow the steps in the link you sent, it says, "The username could not be found. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2221. "

Are you sure you typed in the comand correctly? Try turning on UAC and see if you can install the software after enabling UAC.

Ok. Forget about enabling the hidden administrator account. I assume that when you first tried to install the software, you had UAC off is that correct? Have you enabled UAC and tried installing the software as an administrator? The reason I ask is sometimes having UAC disabled can cause certain programs to not install properly so I am making sure that you have tried installing the sofware with UAC enabled.

Holy Cow, that did it! Which is strange because in the past, having UAC enabled has caused many of my programs to NOT install or work properly.

Great. So you were able to install the software with no problems then?
