When I was on XP, I used a lot of desktop icons from PIFMGR.DLL and SHELL32.DLL for various desktop shortcuts .

Since Win7 doesn't have some of the same icons that I am used to, is there any reason I can't just copy those 2 directories into Win7 using a different name such as PifmgrOLD.dll and Shell32OLD.dll so I can then select them to keep my same shortcuts?

    YaYYY it works!

I made copies of the 2 XP icon files and renamed them pifmgrXP.dll and shell32XP.dll and placed both pairs in the c|:Windows directories in the subdir of SysWOW64 and System32 and it works like a charm. I got my old desktop shortcut icons back just like they were in XP.
