This may be in the wrong forum so please direct me where it should reside. Perhaps Microsoft Mail - although it seems more like an internet connectivity problem rather than a specific e-mail client problem.

Helping a friend who is temporarily in an extended care facility. Can receive e-mail but not send. Friend uses Outlook 2002 for e-mail.

Cox is TV/Internet/Email provider at home location - has a xxx.cox.net e-mail address. At the temporary care facility, a free Guest network provides access to the internet. I have talked to the IT managers there and they assure me there is nothing in their setup to block outgoing SMTP e-mails using Cox as the e-mail provider.

I have accessed his Cox account at web level and can send e-mail from there. So I know we have the correct user name and password information. I have the Cox POP3/SMTP numbers and have used them in a seemingly unending combination of attempts and still can't send e-mail.

I feel there is some block that needs to be checked that is blank - or perhaps the other way around - but I have tried what seems to be all the available combinations. Can anyone shed any light on this.

    Doc,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried all the numbers you suggested but no luck. I found that when I enable TSL or SSL, that will often change the setting back automatically to 110 or 25.

I tried to contact Cox via e-mail but they require some personal information for my friend's account which I don't have. I will try that tonight or tomorrow when I go to visit. Hopefully, a solution will present itself before I have to go through all that.

    Doc,

That same page was where I got the settings that I had used previously. I'll see if I can make contact with Cox in the next day or so and will post any results.

You could ask them for the SMTP settings they use in their building.

Many ISP's won't let you use settings from a different provider.

    I also use COX Internet.

You can POP COX email from any computer anywhere in the world, but you MUST be connected via COX (have a COX IP address) in order to use the COX SMTP servers. Because your friend is not connected via COX, sending mail will fail.

    The 2 workarounds are:

    1. Use COX Webmail.
    2. Use a different SMTP server, such as Gmail, for sending messages.

The normal COX server settings for your area are:
    pop.east.cox.net - port 110
smtp.east.cox.net - port 25 (no security, server requires authentication: use same settings as incoming mail server)

Thanks to all for the input. We followed the #2 Workaround proposed by TonyT and he is now up and running with a Gmail account. Will mark this one as Resolved.
