I have windows 98 and the display had been ok except once in awhile I would have to restart to get the pixel adjuster to slide to the right.

I've had some other problems so I re-ran the windows disk today. It didn't help those other problems and now I can only get 16 colors! It's even hard to read this window as I type.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance.

Did you check to see that you are using the right drivers for your video card?

    16 colors

Under "Display Adapters ", I have it set for Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA). It says: "this device is working properly."

I'm not sure if that's the same one I had been using but there aren't any others listed as compatible.

What should I do next? And thanks very much for responding.

That is the problem. All you will get is 16 colors.

You need to find out what Video card you have and re-install drivers for it.

Ok, that helps to know. Unfortunately, I can't find my user's manual right now so I don't know how to determine my video card make/model.

I see that the video card that I do have currently (the one listed above) is in the windows INF directory and there are several other PNF files in there.

Anyway, tomorrow I will look through boxes in the closet for that manual and hopefully that will tell me what video card I should be using.

BTW, I do have a startup disk and the Windows98 disk that came with the computer. Maybe there's some way to fix it with those that I didn't see before? This is all new to me so it might be some simple solution that I'm just not aware of yet.

Thanks, I'll be back here tomorrow. (and I'll be checking back here occasionally over the next couple hours tonight)

You guys motivated me to not give up and through several hours of poking through the 'puter, I determined that it was supposed to be an SiS530 video card. I found that out through my Norton Utilities.

SiS has a website with a free download so I did that and it worked! Once I unzipped the download and ran the install wizard, it restarted the computer and came back with everything looking good.

Thanks very much for your help. I'll probably be back with a question about my original problem (unrelated) tomorrow and that'll be in the Windows98 forum.

    Thanks again

Thanks for replying with the good news.

Now. Hoping that you have more than one partition ( or HD ) store the new drivers some where other than the C: drive. Both the main download and the folder they were unzipped into.

Then if the case does arise that you have to format C: the dirvers will not get lost.
