Hi Bobm735. Please observe posting rule number 2, Posting in an inappropriate forum, http://www.windowsbbs.com/rules.php.

Now onto your problem. Download and run Dial a Fix, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4899.html. Extract the files inside the folder. When its done then run the program. When it opens, allow the program to remove any policy restrictions of it finds any. Next Select the options to fix Windows Upate. When those options have been selected hit the Go button and let Dial a Fix run. After its finished running close Dial a Fix, reboot the computer, then try accessing Windows Update again.

If that doesn't work then, open Dial a Fix and click the hammer button which will launch dial a fixes advanced tools. Select the option to reinstall BITS and hit the Go button. Now see if Windows Update will work.

In addition to what Arie said, since Dial a Fix didn't work to solve your problem try running sfc /scannow from the run box in the start menu. Follow the instructions here, http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html.
