When someone emails me a link so I can go to the site, if it is posted in the attachment box such as ......xxxxx.url and I click on the link, I get the messagethat it is a octet-stream file and Netscape does not know what to do with it. I have tried adding it to my helper applications, I have selected use default etc. and it can not be opened. If someone emails me a link and includes the http://www.sitetosee.com and I can click on the link and get right to it.

I noticed in some other messages, they were advised to delete the Octet-Stream under applicatons in Navigator. Would this do the trick?

I never ran into any octet stream problems, but I behave myself. Read this link from Ramona's Solutions. It is a download problem. If you have link it should be in the text, not as an attachment. I don't trust attachments. http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns71cantdownload.html

As for the sitetosee.com, it could not be found. May be they did not pay their bills!

    Tish,

Look in Edit | Preferences | Navigator | Helper Applications for the filetype "application octet-stream" and select it, then click the REMOVE button.

Your link for sitetosee is bad, so no way to check...

    Ramona,
I don't have that application now, but I think that I had it at one time.
How does that "big help" show up?

    Westside,

Not clear on which application, or "big help" you mean?

    Octet Stream/Url - Thank You

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions on correcting this problem. I sincerely apologize for posting sitetosee, it was just an example and it is not a working site. I'm so sorry. : (

I will read the download link, and remove the octet/stream and move forward from there.

I will report back. Thank you all again. Hugs from Tish

    Westside,

When a webserver has an incorrect mimetype it shows up as application/octet-stream, which is the mime for unknown binaries. That is why a user should delete that entry in the list of Helper Applications. Netscape or Mozilla creates the entry in the Helper Applications, in order to compensate for the server's error. When a user encounters this, then saving to the HD is the best way to handle the file.

I happen to be saving my files to the hard drive, so I have not run into these problems. I was being sarcastic about the "Big help ". And, Mozilla/Netscape surely is no help at all on this. But, I am so used to the claims of ignorance (does not know how to open...) that I never bother to do anything but saving to the hard drive. It is more fun that way: Example: I disabled WMP as default player for audio files. In particular .asx. For some reason Winamp comes up as default, but it is even more clueless than Mozilla, but I open the downloaded files with JetAudio. The shortcut on the desktop is still Winamp's.
