Was building a new machine, Asus A8N mobo, got the following error after rebooting:

Startservices >>>> THE SERVICE DATABASE IS LOCKED
StartService >>> Can't Start Kernel Mode Driver Service
Error >>> Can not load EIO.DLL.

Googled for an answer and found that tons of people are having this problem but never found an answer. So I digged into it and solved it. This post is to advise, since I also found this problem discussed (but not solved) in a closed thread on this board.

    Solution:
    Search the registry for eio.dll

The first reference to it will have some nonsensical key name and the following value:
    C?\Program Files\ASUS\SmartDoctor\EIO.dll

Fix this typo to fix the problem (Replace the ? with a : )

Like HP and Compaq before them, ASUS appears to have a programming quality problem. And, of courwe, there is absolutely no reference to this problem on the ASUS web site, although the problem's been around for almost a year.
