Booting from the W7 disk starts the installation, I choose a clean install, select the drive where I want to install, it goes to the copying, expanding, installing etc. screen, and after it goes through the usual install procedure it tells me it will reboot. This is where it gets weird. Instead of continuing the installation after the reboot, it starts the install all over again. I tried removing the disk before it gets a chance to start again but this only gets me to a black screen with a blinking cursor.

I'm not hitting the "Press any key" prompt. Any chance this is a hard disk problem?

    Help

    1. Does the hard drive pass the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic test?

      • Download and burn the Ultimate Boot CD to CD. It has all the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic utilities, (plus much more). Simply boot your computer from this CD and select the utility you want to run.

If you aren't sure who made the hard drive in your computer, use Seagate's Seatools as it will work with most any make of drive.

      • You may find the following instructions helpful for burning the UBCD.iso file to disc:
    2. Might also try resetting the CMOS/BIOS Setup to factory defaults.

You say you "select the drive where I want to install." Did you delete any existing partitions and create a new operating system partition?

Oddly enough, I did get up and running. Here's the story:

I did mindlessly delete a tired and old W7 install. The new install resulted in the problem I described. I tried a number of image restores which always ended with the black screen and cursor. The last and older image restore I tried resulted in a screen message telling me:

    1. Boot configuration data for your PC is missing or contains errors.
    2. Winloader.exe is missing.
    3. Run repair.

I ran my W7 repair disk, rebooted and found the new installation on the D drive. Not where I wanted it but I can fix that later. Looks like the problem has been resolved. The deleted install is back on the C drive.

Learned my lesson. Don't delete the C partition...just install over it.

PS: If you don't have a W7 repair disk, do make one. The W7 install DVD may not offer a repair option at least mine didn't on bootup.
