Can I unplug the memory sticks and plug them back in to make sure I have a clean connection. What would this do to my memory or the computer?
    Any help appreciated.

Hi carogator, and wellcome to WindowsBBS :)

Yes, you can unplug and plug back your memory sticks. But be careful with the static electricity, since it can easily damage electronics such as computer parts.
Have you computer (desktop?) plugged in a grounded wall outlet, make sure its OFF, and you can proceed opening the case. Having a wrist grounding strap would be really good.
And BTW, if you are concerned about the condition of your memory sticks, there is free software that tests RAM, its called memtest, or something like that. I haven't used it.

Hi carogator, Welcome to WindowsBBS. :) Your question has been answered by ThomasJK.
You can clean the contacts on the RAM using a clean rubber eraser and being careful not to be too vigorous. You can also used compressed air to blow out any dust that may be present in the motherboard connection.
When you install the RAM, make sure that the RAM seats correctly and again with care, moving the RAM side to side in the connector to ensure a good contact may help.

This is the RAM tester that ThomasJK is referring to. Neil.
