can I turn user-installed apps into root-installed ones?

    Is there a way,
(short of uninstalling apps as user
+ reinstalling them all as administrator)
to make existing user-installed apps systemwide
and available for all users, current and future?

In Unix you use apps as a user, and install them as an administrator, and that's about it.

In WinXP you still have problems as a nonprivileged user, and lots of people (most?) normally work with admin privileges. Vista is much better in this regard - a quarter century too late, I'd say, and at the cost of a humonguos and unnecessarily contrived security redesign....

I had even forgotten that on my XP comp I had given myself full admin privileges as user, so I forgot the user/admin divide, and ended up installing a number of apps "as user ", as opposed to system-wide.

Everything works fine, from this superficial p.o.v. as a user licensed to kill, but I really feel this is not kosher. :-((

    Suggestions anyone?

    Hi Filippo

If you are using XP Pro it should be straightforward ....

In Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View - scroll down and uncheck 'Use simple file sharing' if checked.

In Program Files right click on the executable for the program in question > Security tab and set up user permissions there.

In XP Home the security tab is not there by default - there is a way I believe of showing it, but I would need to check if you need to know.

Thank you Pete! This surely allows other users to start those apps!

But, (where?) should I manually intervene to make sure that all the menu links are enclosed in each new users' setup?

Is there a skeleton setup I can directly copy? Or is e.g. each new user cloned from the root account, or from the 1st user?

    As you now appreciate,
    my ingnorance isn't just deep,
it's also pretty far reaching! :)

Copy the program shortcuts to the All User profile (\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs).
