I need to know if it is possible to run Nortons Anti Virus and Ontarget System Suite 4.0 at the same time on Win ME. If it is, then I need to know how to configure the programs so they will co-exist peacefully. :)

We have one computer which is running AVG and NAV and there are no conflicts between them. The other computer has had Ontarget System Suite 4.0 installed and NAV was probably disabled at the time. Since it is no longer possible to obtain program and virus definition updates for System Suite 4.0, we need to enable NAV (so we can get updates) and configure System Suite 4.0 to tolerate it.

Ontarget System Suite was installed, by a person I am not able to contact any longer, to rebuild after a trojan and some worms. I do not know (and can't find out) what that person did to NAV at the time to disable it. Whatever was done apparently affected the symevnt.386 file and may have removed it. I tried to enable NAV auto-scan and it caused the computer to crash. The error message informed me that symevnt.386 file could not be found and that I might need to reinstall NAV. I searched for this file and could not find it on the computer.

So - - it may be if I un-install and re-install NAV that both will run.

I will greatly appreciate help from anyone who is able to steer me in the right direction.

Download Symclean.exe and put it somewhere you can find it later if needed.

    Get offline.

    Uninstall NAV.

Disable the AV part of Ontarget.

Reinstall NAV. If it does not go in cleanly, run symclean.exe to completely remove all of it and try the reinstall again.

Get online and update NAV as the first thing you do.

If you have two AV products playing nice together, you got lucky. I'd still suggest disabling one of them and only using it for an occasional double check and stopping the other when you do.

    Still working on it Newt!

Sorry to take so long getting back here. I'll not try to tell all that I've been through with this beast.

What I have learned is that I cannot remove NAV/NIS by any method so far. I used uninstall but it didn't clean it. Then I ran symclean.exe which told me there were no components to clean! I went to add/remove programs and tried to remove it from there and was unsuccessful. I ran symclean.exe again with the same result as before. The folder is still there with the NAV/NIS exe files. There is still an active icon on the desktop that will activate the programs. It will do a manual scan, but will not run a scheduled one or check for updates (apparently related to symevnt.386). We have kept this unit off line entirely due to this situation.

I did manage to contact the person who cleaned out the trojan. He removed the On Target program entirely so that it is no longer an issue, but did not get NAV/NIS to work properly again. I have less confidence in that person now and will probably try to work through this without him.

I suspect that NAV/NIS 2001 (our CD version) was restored using NAV/NIS 2003 (shows under the logo on the screen) and the result is a bast@rd version. If that is what has happened, do you think I'll be able to remove it using the tools in NIS 2004? I'll buy the new version if it will help me remove whatever is on there now!

I'll not be surprised if I eventually have to format and clean install the OS and the other software. I will appreciate any help you can give.

    Have a happy new year!

Ed B, here's a link to Norton's site that has methods to uninstall NAV/NIS and NSW manually. Quite a bit to plow through but I have used the manual uninstall to successfully remove older versions of Norton/Symantec stuff. Norton and Symantec products leave tons of entries behind in the registry and the file system even using the add/remove and symclean methods.Uninstall NAV etc

If you choose to go this way, after you have finished the manual uninstall as per Norton's instructions and uninstalling anything that shows in Add/Remove for Norton/Symantec or LiveUpdate, do a further search through the registry for Norton; Symantec; LiveUpdate and the same for the file system, and delete all entries found.

Once all this is done, then try and re-install the version of NAV/NIS you want.

Hopefully this will work so you don't have to format etc. :)

    That looks promising.

    John

Thanks for the response, I looked at the site and scanned down it to make a cursory evaluation. It looks as if it may hold some promise and may have been written for persons such as myself.

I seriously doubt that I am the first to have had a later version installed over an older one. It appears that 2003 was the one that made special removal tools necessary.

I will try that method asap and post here to let you know how it worked.

    Thanks,

    Ed B
