It seems to be becoming almost impossible to buy a new note book that comes with Windows XP Pro. Besides demanding tons more memory and being a night mare to set up, Vista seems to be a blatant marketing tool because it makes a heck of a lot of expensive software and hardware redundant.

My notebook will need replacing soon, but I am putting it off because I do not want to be forced to "upgrade" to Vista

My question is this: if I buy a new notebook that comes with Vista could I make the obligatory back up set ('cos note books sold with Vista don't come with an installation disk), format the HDD and then install Windows XP Pro as the operating system?:D

If this is is possible will it work on all new notebooks that come with Vista or just some? If only some, then which ones?

    Thanks Pete C!!

    Thanks for those threads Pete!

I did not know where to start looking for the answer.

The picture is much clearer now.

I wish the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission or its USA equivalent had the guts to tackle Microsoft over the Vista issue.

I suspect that what Masonite said in a previous post (8th September 2007) is not so far fetched viz

"Personally, I suspect a conspiracy, LOL, cooked up by Mr.Gates and his bedmate Mr.Acer (and Mr.Dell, and Mr. Compaq and Mr.Benq etc etc) which deliberately thwarts the efforts of anyone who has the temerity to dump a perfectly inadequate OS for something that works. "
