    Hi,

I have an old Compaq 5320US with a 1.5GHz "Willamette" cpu, and 512MB of PC 133RAM. I would like to upgrade the processor. It has a Compaq 077CH motherboard, and I cannot find any information on what cpu's it will run. I also cannot seem to access any changeable voltage or multiplier setings via the BIOS.

The current processor runs on 1.75V, and has a 400Mhz bus, and is a socket 478. Intel i845 chipset.

So, the question is, can I just plug in a 2.8Ghz, 400Mhz P4 Norwood which runs on 1.5V into this motherboard without making any setting adjustments? Or do I have to stick with the same family of 1.75V Willamette processors.
Unfortunately, the 1.75V versions only go up to 2Ghz, not a very big change.

I would appreciate any suggestions you could make for this upgrade.

    Thanks!

If you cannot find information at HP/Compaq, then I would have to say I would doubt it.

Look in the downloads and click on the name/listing of any BIOS upgrades. See if there is anything for the (Northwood) CPU. Upgrade support for Compaqs is not extensive.

I have replaced a few P4 motherboards. Consider getting a basic motherboard, there are still a few around. The ones I have done have turned out well. They have things like SATA and RAID, but I am not going to spend a great deal of money on them. It has turned out to be a new lease of life for them and although not super computers they do the basics adequately. You would need to upgrade the RAM, but this will give you a balanced system (PC133 would be a bottleneck anyway).
