Our family all use the one PC with the one user account. I would like to be able to password a folder. Can I do this or must I make different user accounts to restrict access ?

Much better to give each person their own account. That way, you can easily restrict who has access to what. Also, each user can set up desktop and lots of other goodies to suit their needs/preferences and not step on anyone else.

As usual Newt is right again.

Having seperate User accounts is the way to go. And Xp makes life easy in that you have a "Shared Documents" folder available as common ground for all users. Also it includes the one option I wish W2K had, FAST USER SWITCHING!

As to the password issue - you can password protect a compressed folder, like a zip file.

frodo - since you can now use pictures with the accounts, my guess is your kiddos could easily pick out which was theirs if you gave say Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck (if you have a he and a she).

And especially with youngsters of that age, much better to give each his/her own work space. Much.

Since the 5 y/o can probably read some (or soon will) and the 3 y/o isn't there yet (unless a real prodigy), setting one account up to have text read all the time and the other to have it read only on request might be interesting. As would using a female voice for one and male for the other (or different female/male voices). All sorts of personalizations that are wonderful for youngsters.

And just think of all the great things you will learn in the process. :D
