I bought a new computer with windows xp. I wanted to keep my old files from and old computer with windows 98 on the harddrive. I installed the old drive as a slave in the new computer, however, when windows xp boots, it says "new device found" and gives the drive serial number, but hangs there. What should I do?

My first thought is that the jumpers may not be correct. Double-check them, especially your main drive since they sometimes have a different setting for the presence of a slave on the same channel.

Also, try booting from a 98 boot floppy and running fdisk. Make sure that the XP partition is active and not the Win98 one. Chances are that that partition was set active in its previous incarnation.

Be careful with fdisk and don't change anything else.
