Something I don't very often is the search feature. I am looking for a file on my computer, but I keep running into Cortana, who insists I have to set up a MicroSoft account before I can do a search. It was so much easier on earlier versions of windows. Can I do a search like in old times or am I stuck with Cortana. I thought I had her turned off, I don't have a cam or mike, so I can't use her anyway.
Using Win10 with the latest updates.

Open Cortana, go down to the bottom of Cortana you'll see "Ask Me Anything" put your search there.

That's what I've been doing, but Cortana asks me to sign in to microsoft account before she can search. Why would I need a microsoft account to search my own computer? I just want to do a simple search to find my file. Cortana doesn't need to know my search history and other stuff and I don't want to put it on the web.

If you move to New Zealand this is not a problem. We get a message that says, "I'm afraid I'm not available to help in your Region ". Search works quite well without Cortana. MS are still under promise to give us Cortana at a later date.

Hi lynn1102. You could always install a Start Menu replacement program like Start10 or StartIsBack and you will never have to use Cortana at all for searching for files on your system.

Why not use the search function in Windows Explorer?

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. I check all the programs mentioned and started with StartisBack. I looked good and did what I wanted, BUT it killed my Windows Live Mail. I un-installed it and had to do a system restore to get the mail back. I must be getting too old for this stuff, cause I had completely forgotten about the search using Explorer. I will use that from now on. Thanks to all
