I just set up (for the first time) a simple computer network where one Win/XP Home computer can access the INternet, and the other computer Win/XP Pro is the client. Everything works fine, but I wanted to change whether the client can control the internet connection. But when I went to Connection Properties -Advanced on my XP Home the option wasn't there. After reading other messages, I realize that WinXP Home apparently has networking problems, but I still wonder if I missed something. SHOULD it be there? If so, how do I get to it? Thanks for any response.

Roger, sorry but not sure what option you are talking about or exactly what you are trying to do when you speak of "the client can control .... ".

And what sort of networking problems is your XP-home system having?

I think I solved my problem for now.

Thanks Newt, for your response. Sorry to be vague - but I think I have solved my own problem, at least for now. I'll try to explain briefly again, and would appreciate any other suggestions.

Computer 1 is XP Home with dial up Internet
Computer 2 is XP PRO networked to computer 1

I wanted to use Internet Connection Sharing to allow #2 to access the Internet through #1's connection. I also wanted #1 to dial up automatically at the beginning of #2's Internet session and then hang up after #2's session was over, assuming #1 was not itself using the Internet.

Apparently this is not possible. The automatic dial up worked fine, but #1 wouldn't automatically hang up at the end of the #2's session. In addition, with the automatic dialup option set, #1 would mysteriously dial up even when neither #2 nor #1 were doing anything. I suspect Windows Update or something like that was doing it but don't know how to find out for sure.

In any event, I didn't want automatic uncontrolled dialups, so I changed the options of #2 to manual dial up only. That's not quite as convenient, but good enough. Now the user on #2 has to manually dial, use the Internet, and manually hangup.

It seems to work, and nothing unknown seems to be going on. So thanks for your response, and if you have any other suggestions, I would appreciate it.

I think manual is lots better these days since more than a few things want to 'call home' without asking your permission.

I also think that even with dial-up, a firewall that monitors inbound and outbound traffic is a good idea since it will allow you to be sure exactly what app is trying to get out.

Also can strongly recommend Ad-aware and Spybot both be run regularly to deal with the spyware that loves to call it's master and tell all sorts of stuff about you without asking permission.
