    hi
I recently asked my brother to set up my new computer , in doing so he has partitioned my hard drive into several small sections , he says this is how a comp should be set up but i am now finding that my C drive (14 gig) which has all windows etc on it has 12.5 gig and it seems to be slowing down and sys defrag even says it cant perform due to lack of space. My hard drive was 160gig when i bought it and is now chopped into several drives which have nothing in them , can i not just remove the partitions ?

You can, but there is a degree of risk involved and any attempt should be preceeded with a backup of your data to an external source - external hard drive or DVD/CD.

You cannot change partitions using Windows and will need to use third party software such as Partition Magic or Acronis Disk Director.

I agree with your brother's view on partitioning - OS on one partition and other partitions for data which means that you can reformat the OS partition without data loss, but it seems that your OS partition should have been made larger in the first place. However ....
That is where your data should be kept - move some/all across and you may well have enough free space for the OS drive to function better.

For a hard drive containing the OS to function well 20-25% free space is a must - especially for defragmenting.
