I wonder why I can pick up and send my POP3 e-mail in Internet Explorer 5 but can't in Netscape (4.6). All the POP3 settings in Netscape seem to be OK.
Is it not possible to have two browsers using POP3 mail?
I notice that when I try to get mail, a dialogue box pops up asking me to put in my password and the mail account that appears in this box is a combination of my name, POP3 account and ISP, but is nothing that I've typed in myself. What worries me is that it's written in the form of an e-mail address which doesn't exist.
Is there any way I can start from scratch?

To change your user info click on edit\preferences\mail & newsgroups\mail servers. Click on your mail server in the incoming mail server box and then click on the edit button.

    Hi Ramona,
Thanks for this interesting perspective on the minor problem that I have, which has generated quite a bit of traffic over on the Tech Guy BBS.
An extract from my latest posting there sums up the problem:
"but it really does seem that the problem I'm having is really the reverse of the one outlined in the article. In my case, Netscape is attributing an "@" into my username when my username doesn't have one. My e-mail address does, but my username doesn't. "
I suspect that you look in that BBS quite a bit, but here's the thread:

    Hi Fitz,

Yes, I had been following the thread at the other Forum, and I'm "Cherokee ", who posted the "@" NSKB Article. :) Even though it was the reverse of your problem.

I'm still looking for a solution, and if I find out anything I will definitely post it.

    Fitz,

This has really peaked my interest, and I wonder if you would like to try a few more fixes? If so:

    With Communicator closed:

Delete all the *.snm files in your Mail folder
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername\Mail

Run Communicator and see if you can send and receive. If not:

    Close Communicator
Rename your Mail folder to OldMail

Run Communicator and see if you can send and receive.

Let us know if any of this works.

    Ramona :D

    Ramona,

As of last night Fitz said it was working.
I can't check right now because the site is down.

    I have fixed the problem!
My pop3 e-mail now works in Netscape for the first time in almost a year!
It was all down to the username I chose when editing the incoming mail server settings.
It seems to me that "username" seems to vary in its meaning. In some areas, for example my outgoing SMTP mailbox, it is quite happy just with my name, but, unknown to me all this time, for my INCOMING mail it wanted myname.email server as the username. The confusion is compounded by the difference in end-tags in the UK. In some places in the identity setup I have ISP.com, in others, for instance, my e-mail address, I have ISP.co.uk.
    Anyway, it works fine now.

Thanks for your help. Over here on the Windows BBS and over on Tech Guy BBS, which I know quite a few of you monitor, I've learned a lot of really useful stuff on the way to the solution. My particular thanks to Hewee and Ramona/Cherokee who have been particularly vigilant and dogged in their pursuit of a solution. I do hope that you didn't feel that I've lead you both on a wild goose chase. I say that because the solution does appear to be quite obvious, as so many solutions do in retrospect.

    Fitz,

Thank you for concluding the thread with the solution to your email problem. It is most appreciated!

Yes, obvious that your username was the culprit, but not at all obvious to me, that the different end tags caused the problem. I too learned something new.
