The print size of e-mails is too large using the default Netscape 7.1 "Shrink to Fit" feature when HP LasetJet printers are used (at least the three different models I have tried). I always have to go into Print Preview at the start of each session and turn off that feature and select "85%" to get the print size back to what it should be (what it was in Netscape 4.7.4, and to a size that avoids unwanted line breaks). Is there a way of making "85%" the default setting?

    PLS

    Hi PLS,

To the best of my knowledge, adjusting the on-screen font size in Netscape does not impact printed font size.

I suppose that you have you experimented with the font settings in Preferences | Appearances | Fonts?

    Elegant

    Ramona --

Well, that was an elegant solution! No, in fact I had not experimented with the font sizes under Appearances . . . I think I have still not fully absorbed the meaning of the little triangles that are Netscape's equivalent of the fully understood + signs in Windows . . .

Thank you! That will save a lot of trouble in the future!

    Whoops

Actually . . . Reducing the font size under Appearances doesn't work so well. It does indeed reduce the size of the printed font (and the size of the font in the Print Preview screen), but it also reduces the size of the font on-screen in the regular message viewing screen. Scaling the print size down to 85% affects only the size of the font in the Print Preview screen and on the actual printed page, but doesn't change the font on the regular viewing screen. Since the default monospace font size of 13 works well for on-screen viewing, but is too large for the Print Preview screen and printer (ugly sized print and inappropriate line breaks -- printer dependent, as I mentioned in some earlier posting, with HP laser printers but not deskjet printers), and the monospace font of 11 is just too small for comfort in the regular viewing screen, that leaves me with needing to adjust the scale to 85% before printing each time I open the program. So -- either I live with doing this, or (again to the question): Is there a way to make the 85% scaling the default, rather than the "Shrink to Fit" option?
