I would recommend Mailwasher. It filters prior to opening.

I second the suggestion re: Mailwasher. I tried others but this is easy to use. This is a free download. It allows you to use it for one e-mail address. There is Mailwasher Pro which is not expensive that allows you to use more than one address. It is unbelievable how many addresses I have in my blacklist filter and that doesn't include the ones that I just bounce back and don't black list. Worth a try.
