I am planning to uppgrade to a new PC with Win7. I am not yet certain if I want to go with 32 or 64 bit version and may experiment with 64 first to see if I can get all my apps to run. My question is can I install either one from the 64 bit version? Just thinking this would make more economic sense if I can, since sooner or later I'll end up on 64 bit anyway...

The answer to your specific question is no.

Now, if you buy the retail version (as opposed to the cheaper OEM) you'll get both 32 & 64 bit versions.
