Pentax *1stDS Digital SLR Camera conected with USB cable to Windows XP PC.

Windows sees camera as a hard drive in
"Device Manager" as "PENTAX DIGITAL_CAMERA USB Device"
    and Properties says Working ok,
but it is not showing in "My Computer "
    window
    ,
so I can't move pictures to PC or download any upgrades to the camera hardware.

Has anybody any solutions to this problem please?

Have you tried a USB Card-reader, I find them much better than connecting the Camera.

Can you download using the Pentax Photo Browser software that was included?

did u install the camera & it's software in accordance w/ the instructions from the maker?

if it's a USB device connection, u should heed their install instructs since many will not work until u dummy up & do ;)

Also, when in doubt, try rebooting after attaching.

Is camera turned on? Although some cameras will sense the usb connection and power up the memory card , others require setting the switch on the camera to a specific setting. Others require you to choose the device you are connected to and click okay using the LCD display on the camera.
