    oS: WinXP

i installed a SMC network card into a PC running winXP, windows says the cable is unplugged so i tested the wire with another PC on same network and cable is fine. (note lights on pc card are ON)

The cable is running to a D-Link DSS-5+ 10/100 ethernet switch.

    what could the problem be??
network card not campatable with cabling/operating system??...

    I'm thinking drivers ?

Try Windows Update as SMC cards are bog standard so MS will likely have a pointer to some updated XP specific drivers

If that doesnt work I'd look at the duplex settings of the card and the switch - some switch/NIC combos dont auto-negotiate very well together

My son had the same problem on his XP machine, changing the duplex settings fixed it.

networking and properties on your connection. Then to the NIC and probably to advanced or some such.

Some cards have speed and duplexing together and some have them seperate.

If the speed/duplexing on the card don't match that of the switch/hub port, no connection and that annoying "cable unplugged" message that should really read "no connection ".

Since you have a new switch, the 100Mbs full-duplex should work fine. If you have a proper cat5 cable. Cat3 won't deal with much over 10Mbs and you can easily turn a cat5 into a cat3 or worse if you put the ends on yourself and leave too much wire untwisted at the connectors.

    thnx,

i think the wire is fine, i used it on another PC to verify it, and everything worked fine.

i tried every speed / duplex setting on the card and the switch has no settings that i know of.
    and still says cable unplugged
