Came across the following at http://forums.wugnet.com/refresh-Windows-Explorer-tpc425937.html today, and am wondering if the info is accurate:
»Many users report difficulties when C:\My Documents includes more than 100 directory entries, that go away when the files are moved elsewhere. (For forgotten reasons originating in Win95 Windows cares only about crowding in C:\My Documents and not elsewhere.)
... all subfolders count as entries. My advice is to remove all folders and files you created in C:\My Documents to another folder .... such as "C:\MyDocs ". Personally, all files I create in My Documents don't stay there very long. It's best to keep this folder free from as many files and subfolders as possible.«
I have my hard drive partitioned into C: for the OS, and D: for data, but pretty much everything I have on D: is saved within "My Documents ". I've got literally hundreds of mp3s as well as hundreds of jpgs in "My Music" and "My Pictures" folders respectively, both located within "My Documents" - and I probably have somewhere in the vicinity of hundreds of text documents in there as well. Is my "My Documents" folder just a time bomb waiting to go off? Should I move the music and pictures subfolders out and place them somewhere else?

I've never heard of that limit.

Regardless, note that the discussion is in regard to a Windows 9x system, and I presume you are running XP.

I tried to ascertain what version of Windows they were talking about, but couldn't find a direct mention of it. The original poster talked about his "My Music" folder - I don't recall ever seeing one of those in Win98 or ME (but that may have been simply because I never used them!), but I know I have the folder in XP. On the other hand, one of the 'repliers' commented "Win98 mavens have been warning others about the phenomenon for years now" - not sure where he got Win98 from, or if he was just saying that these issues date back that far.
In any case, thanks for the reply, and I'm happy to hear someone disagree with the size limit!

i believe the limit is 512 in root only. u can have as many files/subs as u want in win otherwise.

i THINK that is ;) ... older versions of win/dos probably have more issues w/ 512+ numbers. it's been a long time but ... it's not really relavent much anymore.

there IS a problem w/ winxp's 'special folder' like my music etc in that IF u choose 'remember' each folder's view options, that they reach a critical number and then just start going nuts ;) ... i've seen this on MANY systems and i don't think it's fixable. u can sorta fix this - depending on the number of files mostly - by 'upping' the registry setting's default value to a higher number. i don't recall the reg setting tho. sorry.

u can also choose not to remember each folder's view settings. that seems to work best for me.

if u'r doing many 'customized' folders, the problems do seem to get worse. eg - since my music etc are 'system' folders, watch the 'all subfolders do the same' checkbox when doing 'customize' stuff. u end up w/ lots of issues on all the system folder's view properties.

    Hi Rebecca,

The discussion is about the "root" folder C:\My Documents - drive/partition C, you have your stuff on a non-root partition D.

I've got hundreds of docs and pics under G:\My Documents - for the XP on my D drive, and under E:\My Documents for the XP on C drive and have never experienced problems with them other than my own making :)

    Regards - Charles

Windows 9x: see: Errors Creating Files or Folders in the Root Directory

Does not apply to FAT32 or NTFS:

Err Msg: Setup Cannot Download Files to the Folder...

Thank you, thank you! In spite of frequent backups, I'm breathing easier again. :)
