I run Win98SE and have had a HP v40 Officejet that bit the dust and am in the market for a new all in on unit but want one that has a flatbed scanner this time . I need one that also has the option to prints both sides. I want a fairly good one for some photo printing also. Any suggestions?

Quickshot - I just bought an HP Officejet 7310 (Scanner, fax, printer, copier) a couple of weeks ago and it has flatbed scanner and double sided printing. Haven't really used it enough yet to give you any definitive analysis but it appears to be a great piece of equipment that's a lot of fun to use. I have put it through it's paces to try everything out and it works great - so far. The automatic two side printer/scanner function adds about $100 to the price tag bringing the unit up to about $400.

If that's not enough to scare you, the software installed in my computer for this monster shows up at slightly over 400MB and the software already had a problem that required another 86 MB of update. Luckily I have a 300+ GB HD. Otherwise I would be looking to start trimming stuff. I have it networked through a Belkin 4 Port wired router linked to cable modem. So some of the software may be for the ethernet capability. Don't know for sure - that sort of information is above my pay grade.

I was looking at a HP 6210 today --some bit cheaper and it may fill my bill--I like the 7310 but am running Win98SE on a Pennium II 300 and run out of resources fast. Thanks for replying

quickshot--The box should tell you what the system requirements for this equipment are.
Most of the new all-in-one equipment connects only using USB. Be sure whatever you buy will work with Win98SE (which has some USB ability) and hopefully with USB 2 (which is much faster than USB 1 or 1.1) and that your PC has USB ports. Or that the supplier will let you return it if things do not work.

quickshot--In general USB-connected equipment requires that the installation CD be run before the equipment is plugged in and turned on. The instructions should tell you if that is the case and will tell you when you can finally connect the equipment. Did you do that?

Yes, I ran the CD to start with and never was prompted to plug in the printer, even removed the CD and reran[took forever] I finally pluged in the printer and received a screen it was trying to fine a driver and I pointed it to the CD but it could not find one on it[it said] and then it froze up and I had to reboot. Now when I plug in the printer it does not bring up a screen new plug and play found and running the CD never does bring up a prompt screen. I am at a loss. Any ideas?

You may need to look through ADD/REMOVE and uninstall anything that refers to the device.

Even though things did not seem to install properly there may be just enough there that the system sees it as being installed.

quickshot--Agree you should make sure you have not partly installed the all-in-one.
But based on what you said, something obviously went wrong with the installation of drivers from that CD. You should not have to "point to the CD" to do that. When you first run the CD (before plugging in/starting the all-in-one) you should be installing the driver(s) on your hard drive and the all-one-should find them automatically when are finally instructed to plug in.
I looked at the specs necessary to install a 6210 and you should be able to do it. So uninstall, if you can find any indication of an installation, and try to install again. I assume you have the instructions for installation in front of you when you run that CD.
