If your PC is 5 years or so old it almost certainly uses the EIDE/ATA interface. SATA drives have only really been around for the last 3 years or so.

You can check very easily by opening the case and looking at the connection between the existing hard drive and the motherboard - a flat ribbon cable ~2" wide is EIDE/ATA.

IDE, EIDE, ATA are effectively the same, now also known as PATA - Parallel ATA whereas SATA is Serial ATA and use round or flat ~1/2" wide cables with a corresppondingly smaller plug.

    Hello ise2006,

Download and run System Information for Windows SIW v1.60

    http://www3.sympatico.ca/gtopala/about_siw.html

In the left panel, scroll down to Storage Devices > click on it and in the right Panel info you'll see under "interface" the type of interface your drive has.

Agree with Pete, it almost certainly is ATA.

    Regards - Charles
