    Hello all,

    Here is my question.

I am running XP pro, with Nero 6.0.0.9 full version, and a brand new Sony DRX-530UL External DVD Burner with updated firmware. I try to burn, but Nero keeps telling me that the burner is being used by another program.

What might be going on here?? I am new at burning DVDs

Do you have XP's built in cd burning software enabled on the drive? If so, try disabling it for that drive. Open My Computer, right click on the cd burner drive letter and choose properties and then click on the recording tab. Uncheck the line that says enable cd recording on this drive. If that doesn't do it, try rebooting and then give it another try. If it still doesn't work you could try disabling the service itself. In fact, you may want to try this first if you don't use XP's software. Click start>run and type services.msc. In the window that opens find Imapi CD Burning COM Service. Double click on it and in the window that opens, where it says startup type, choose disabled. Reboot and then see if the burner works.

I don't know if this is the problem or not as I don't have Nero and I don't know if there's any problems between it and the windows software but it's certainly possible. It's something you can try anyway until somebody else can come up with something.

Do you have any other type of CD burning software installed?

Now that I re-read your post I realize I sort of goofed. I read it to fast the first time and didn't realize it was a DVD burner. Are you trying to burn DVD's or regular CD's? If the latter, it still can't hurt to give my suggestion. You won't hurt anything trying it. Sorry.

A word of caution here ....

    From Black Viper's site ....

    "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service
This service operates that cool “drag and drop†CD burn capability. You will need this service to
burn CD's. What is the good news? If you set this service to manual, the service starts and stops
itself when used with some software packages. This is practically the only service that does do
this! If you still cannot burn a CD with it on manual, switch to automatic and feel safe that it
starts only when “needed.†This service may take up about 1.6 MB of memory in an idle state.
    Default XP Home: Manual
    Default XP Pro: Manual
    Safe Setting: Automatic
Log on as: Local System account
    Dependencies:
What service IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service needs to function properly:
    · None
What other service require IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service to function properly:
    · None "

On my m/c I have this set to Manual, XP burning set to off and am able to burn DVD's with Nero 5.5

Possible you have 2 instances of Nero running? Can be done :)

An uninstall/reinstall of Nero with a reboot in between might help.

That's true if you want to use XP's software for burning CD's but it not necessary to have it running if you're using 3rd party software. I just thought it would better to disable it all together, just to make sure. You can always change it back.

Not intending to be 'picky', but maybe 'Manual' is the best option?

You could be right Pete. All I know is that I've had mine disabled for nearly 2 years and have never missed it. Different strokes for different folks. :)
