I've used IE 6 on the old system but just don't care for it...too many things it doesn't trust me to have the brains to handle myself...so I want to get IE 5.5 SP2 burned onto a disc in case I have to format again. I found IE 5.5 SP2 at the site Jerry mentioned but want to make sure I do this correctly...I download it, saving to disk {my downloads folder}, then just burn the download to a CD. Is that right? Thanks in advance! Brenda

    Hi Brenda:

    From the download site
    http://browsers.evolt.org/download.php?/ie/32bit/5.5_SP2/ie55sp2.exe
you will download a single 84.1MB file called "IE55SP2.EXE ". If you're using a friend's computer, you can put the file right on the DeskTop if you want (your friend's computer may have a default folder called "MY DOWNLOADS" that it will suggest before the download starts -- that's OK too.) When the download is done, click on the "CLOSE" button if the download window doesn't close by itself.

Now find the IE55SP2.EXE on the DeskTop, and double-click on it. It is a "self-extracting archive" file. It will create a new folder on the DeskTop called "IE 5.5 SP2 FULL ". There will be 90 individual files inside the new folder. It's these 90 files that you want to burn onto a CD to take home with you. You can put the whole "IE 5.5 SP2 FULL" folder on your CD, or you can just put the 90 files.

After you've made your CD, you can delete the new folder and the downloaded "IE55SP2.EXE" file from your friend's computer. Tell him "thank you. "

When you get home, to install your new Internet Explorer 5.5, put the CD in your CDROM drive, and find the file called "IE5SETUP.EXE" and double-click on it. The installation will begin. Just follow the prompt screens.

Save the CD (just like your Windows installation CD), because someday you may want to add one of the IE features you did not originally install. This is done using the "ADD/REMOVE" applet in the "MY COMPUTER -> CONTROL PANEL ". IE can also be REPAIRED this same way.

    Good luck.

    Jerry
