Well, I'll try to explain this as simply as possible. All my problems started a few days ago, when I attempted to install the HP Printer Suite for our Photosmart 3210 - which I downloaded off the HP site (200+ mb). I was reluctant to install, because HP software always bogs down my computer... but I did anyway. Next thing I know, I start having issues - my computer is EXTREMELY slow. I looked at the processes, and an HP process was taking up all the CPU. After fighting for a few hours, I uninstalled all the HP stuff, rebooted and then downloaded the bare drivers. However, my PC still took a long time to start up. Strangely, looking at the running processes, some things were jumping to the top of the list (by CPU usage) and then stopping, and all in all, 20% of my CPU was always being used, the other 80-ish were system idle. HOWEVER, if I clicked the performance tap, my CPU showed as being pegged. I can't even play a video without it stopping every 30 seconds. I've tried Ad-Aware, Spybot... even bought the full Norton SystemWorks Suite... NOTHING. The odd thing is that the problem keeps getting worse. Sometimes my CPU is fine, and sometimes its not. The other thing is a bunch of errors that have started ocurring. First WMP (11) started giving me errors whenever I tried to play anything, and had to close. Then I noticed my new iTunes version (7) gave me an error on exit. (Maybe either of these new programs is causeing it?) However, now it's spread to the point where I can't open My Computer... if I do, 'explorer.exe' causes an error and my desktop refreshes without the system tray icons. Also WinRar gives me an error. Dunno what else is affected (o yea - so is internet explorer.) I have a Hijack This log if anyone wants to see it. Also the errors include problems with ntdll.dll and rundll. HELP!!! Virus? Trojan? Windows?! What gives. The only stuff I've changed recently as far as i can remember, is installing Norton, upgrading iTunes... and also actually, I added a second monitor to my pc, so the desktop is now spread across them both and I'm using a lot of nVidia stuff for that...

PLEASE - I'M SO OUT OF IDEAS!!!

    Stang70Fastback,

If you can get to windows to run, go to system restore and restore it to a date that the system was working properly.

If you can not get it to boot to windows, try going to Safe Mode. To do that, tap on the F8 key while booting.

Before you do this, you might want to wait for more responses. Some one might have a better idea

    Thanks

Ok, thanks for the quick feedback. i entirely forgot about that option. I will, however, wait and see what other options people suggest. I'm not convinced that the HP Software is the curent problem I am having, but it did occur right after installation, so maybe it messed something up, I don't know. I also get the elplorer error when using the Windows Search feature (you know, from the start menu.) I'm starting to think Windows itself is corrept. This would be very aggravating since I was still installing stuff from a reformat a month ago because Windows... WAS CORRUPT!

My CPU was not running at 100% when I took this. It was fine. I was still getting errors in all those programs though.

    Hi Stang70Fastback,

I don't see anything malicious running.

    Do see some potential problems:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nvappfilter.dll
O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nvappfilter.dll
O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nvappfilter.dll

You might also try disabing the Google tool bar and the Yahoo (if still running) tools bars, have been known to cause problems.

Also look thru the process data bases linked to in this post:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39425

Some of your startups can be made on demand instead of startup items.

Don't fix anything - I'm moving this thread to the malware removal section for a look see by our security specialists.

    Regards - Charles

Ok, I'm not seeing anything in your log file to indicate a problem.

I would say it's a pretty safe bet that the HP software corrupted your machine. Use system restore if you have not yet done so to get things back to a time when things were properly running.

With regards to the 010 lines in your HijackThis! log file, analysts never ever fix those, as by fixing them with HJT you break the users internet connection.

    See about that file here

The only line that needs fixing and its more a nit pick is the R3 line.

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

Reboot, run HJT, if the above are gone, no need to repost with new log.

    Hi Tom,

Thanks for looking at this HJT log.

Any particular reason that those LSP entries are hanging out there like that? Or is it just a characteristic of particular systems? It seems to be rare.

I'm not 100% sure why it picks out some, which are legit or not, it could be it works off a white list, I'll have to ask around some. That is why it's always important to never fix them, and even when bad ones appear, you use the LSPFix tool

While it's best to Google found file there is also a list maintained by Zupe and CastleCops.

Thanks Tom for the explanation :)

I did remember the "don't fix 010" items from a previous discussion.

I remember a Windows update back a few months ago that had problems living with HP software/drivers/systems.I wish I still had the update # handy.Could this be the problem?
