Ok, I'm stumped. As I get older my memory is fading, but I've never done this before anyway so...

I have a built in Trident Cyberblade AGP 2d\3D video card (AGP 2) that uses a max of 8mb of system ram, and I would like to install an ATI Xpert 128 16mb PCI video card. I also have a 12mb 3Dfx Voodoo 2 video card daisy chained into the built in video, which is easy to remove. It's the built in video that I am not sure about.

Do I have to disable the built in video to use the ATI card, or will it be like the Voodoo 2 was, as in that when I install a game or something that uses 3D, I'll have a choice of which card I want to use?

I looked in both the system BIOS, and checked the manual, but I don't see any way to disable the built in video. Am I to assume that it can't be disabled, and if that's the case, does that mean it isn't necessary?

As usual, thanks in advance for any suggestions... :)

Nevermind... I found the right option in BIOS...

But as luck would have it, the new card didn't work. I got it installed ok, and it seemed like it was going to work fine. But that assumption was based on the default 16 color driver that automatically gets installed.

When I went to install the drivers on the CD, I got an error that said that the adaptor installed was not compatible with these drivers. Seems the CD was for Windows 98 and up, and I have Win95. So off to the ATI website I went and downloaded Win95 drivers, and after installing them, everything seemed to work fine.

That is, until I rebooted. After which the screen lit up all nice and pretty like, except for the fact that the picture on the desktop was the only thing sitting still. All the icons were flashing like mad. I opened the display properties box, tried changing the refresh rate, the display, and anything else I could think of, none of which worked. Except to give me one doosy of a headache. That it did very well.

The drivers were probably the problem. I believe that even though they say this card will work for Win95, I don't think it will. At least not with the only drivers for it that I could find. Either that or the card is just bad.

It's about time for a faster computer anyway... So I guess when I upgrade it, I'll get one that will take AGP cards, and then I can get a nice video card to put in it, and I'll finally be able to play the games a friend of mine in Germany sent me for Christmas last year.

But with this computer, this video card won't work. So I guess I will have to take it back. And wait... :(

    [Edit]
Well, maybe not. I was just checking out the ATI website, and it appears they have seen this behavior before. They say a different driver will fix it, which I have downloaded and will try reinstalling the card and give these drivers a try tommorow.

Well, it doesn't appear anybody looks in here anymore. The last few questions I've posted went unnoticed.

Oh well, if anyone reads this... I got the card working. It was the drivers.
