I've just installed a Buffalo TeraStation Pro on our network to act as an additional backup resource. When you connect into its web interface, there is a little icon in the bottom left of the page. It is labelled "I'm here ". When you click on it, the unit (hardware) plays a little tune!

Just the thing for a crowded server room, I can imaging the designers thinking. However, it is a pretty big block to lose and need to find by sound. Also the unit displays its name on the front LED screen, so you'd have to work hard not to be able to identify it, even if you have a few.

So, in my opinion it has only one purpose - Crowd pleaser.

It does give some pleasure to a busy IT Manager, to be able to set off odd sounds as unsuspecting users pass the server room. A little thing but we try to spread a little happiness to our users.

I can see it now...Reg busy on a workstation creating new .wav files for passersby:
    tuck-in-your-shirt.wav
    ooo-la-la.wav
    break-is-over-get-back-to-work.wav
    god-save-the-noc.wav

What I need are subliminal messages that I can broadcast round the network:
"If something breaks, try rebooting before you call for support "
"IT managers deserve a pay rise "
"People who treat their PCs like junk deserve all they get "
"Dilbert is our true messiah "

    You forgot some:
"We don't work on weekends ".
"We won't open ports for limewire or torrents ".
"When asking us to fix your home pcs, promise lobster dinners in exchange ".
