I signed up for BT broadband last week and they sent me a BT ADSL Voyager USB modem. So far so good. When I tried to set it up over the weekend all the drivers seemed to install OK, it asked for the Windows 98 CD and seemed happy with what it found. But on reboot I get a "Windows Operation Exception please restart your computer" message before windows opens this comes up after the windows splash page but before windows itself starts. Restart works OK in safe mode and works when I unplug the usb lead but not when the modem is plugged in. If I boot up unconnected, then plug in the modem I am able to connect to the net.

BT's helpful suggestions are "we could refund the cost of the modem" and I could go and buy a PCI modem or ethernet card and see if that worked better. Alternatively contact the shop I bought the PC from and see if they have any software patches for the chip set. Not sure about that one either.

Any suggestions you might have would be gratefully received
