Hello - I'm just getting used to my new Windows xp after having Windows 98 for six years.

When I log on a window comes up in the middle of the screen saying "BT BroadBand Basic could not find a BT Broadband dial up networking entry. The programme will now exit. "

I'd be glad to stop this window appearing but cannot find how to do it.

To log on connecting to Broadband I use a shortcut icon on my desktop. This connects me automatically but it won't work until I've deleted the notice in the window. Can anyone suggest anything. please? Thankfully the window doesn't stop me from using BT Broadband - it just delays my access.

    Regards, Mary.

I am also a BT Broadband user, but I suspect my package predates Basic by a margin :)

My initial reaction is to suggest an uninstall and reinstall of the Broadband software, including the Connection Manager (if that exists on your package) through Add/Remove programs as it is possible that your install is broken somewhere.

Is there a dialup networking connection shown in Control Panel > Network Connections?

I think your first action should be to email Broadband Support - through My Account on your home page - I had a good response from them on a problem with IE 7 beta 2 - didn't solve the problem, but they tried :)

    Broadband Dial Up Networking Entry

I had no success Pete. I couldn't get the BT email link - I have BT Broadband Desktop help. I've given up on them before because they are very slow. By the time I had tried whatever they had suggested and got back to them I was put back in the queue - then a new adviser had to take time to go over all the communication before making another suggestion - and it went on and on. I just gave up - their system was frustrating. I tried complaining and they constantly sent me emails saying that if they did not hear from me in 24 hours they would assume the matter was resolved. I can't say how frustrating their system is. This site is heaps and heaps better and I do appreciate it, thank you all!!

If I continue having difficulties with the on line help from my ISP then eventually I'll change.

Thank you, Pete. The Window coming up in the middle of my screen is a bit of a nuisance but I'm so delighted with my new Windows xp system that the problem is relatively minor. Thank you.:) Mary

The first thing I did was to uninstall all the BT stuff except for the Connection Manager - don't necessarily recommend that you do that :) , but the route I used to email them was this - your setup may be different of course ....

BT Yahoo Home Page > My Services > Go to Help Pages > Under General Help - Contact us > Send us a Message > Ask a question.

As I said it may be nothing like that on your setup.

Thank you, Pete. I somehow ploughed my way through my BT Telephone Account and found a link. I have just used that and, if it brings results, that will be good. If not I'll try your instructions, many thanks, Mary:)

How are you physically connecting to the internet? Broadband modem or router?

By Router, I think, Reggie. - BT Voyager 105 USB ADSL Modem. I thought the "Voyager 105" was a Router - but I'm so unskilled - maybe it is a modem.

I click on the shortcut on my desktop to connect then it does it automatically - I just click. I'm still not altogether sure what I'm doing!

    Regards, Mary.

Pete - would you believe I have received two more automated replies exactly the same as before - one giving me a reference number then one saying (as repeatedly in the past!) that they will assume my query has been resolved if they do not hear from me in 24 hours. I reply - then it all starts again and I just go round in circles - I wonder if anyone else finds it frustrating trying to "get past" automated meaningless "replies? "

    Regards, Mary.

Looks like a glitch in their software - or a plain brush off to discourage you :)

Either live with the problem or reinstall the software - it's your choice :)

I don't think you answered this point.

Hello Pete - I'm too scared (inexperienced) to uninstall and install but I did follow the links vie BT Yahoo to ask a question. The result was just an acknowledgement with number followed by an e-mail saying that if they did not hear from me in 24 hours they would assume the issue had been resolved. As you say, it is probably just a glich in their software - My inexpertise and apprehension won't help! Regards, Mary.

    Hello Pete -

On the control panel on the control panel there is "Network and Internet Connections" - when I click on it there are several options including "Set up or Change Internet Connection."

I'm afraid I'm a bit out of my depth although I am learning to some extent by exploring and trying the advice as I'm able, thank you. Regards, Mary.

Sorry to confuse you - I am using XP with the Classic (Windows 98 interface) which I prefer and see things differently from the standard XP Theme :)

I've fired up my other desktop which has XP Home with the XP interface ....

On the screen which you saw click on Network Connections and you should see a listing similar to that shown in the screenshot - taken from my regular desktop running in Classic mode.

Do you see a BT Broadband Dialup?

No Pete, I don't see a dial up connection via the control panel and connections. I use the desktop icon then click dial. Regards, Mary:)

Very strange  - it does explain the "BT BroadBand Basic could not find a BT Broadband dial up networking entry. The programme will now exit." message when you log on.

But as the system is working and you do not feel inclined to re-install BT Broadband - let sleeping dogs lie :)

Incidentally have you checked that you are indeed connected via broadband - what is your connection speed? Mousing over the networking icon (the twin monitor icon that lights up when transmitting/receiving) in the Notification area by the clock will tell you.

Yes I think it's best to let sleeping dogs lie!

I did as you suggested and it says "DSL modem" I left clicked on it and there were several options including one to click to connect to BT Broadband. I clicked on this and it said "BT Broadband." This must be the longer way of connecting as my shortcut on the desktop (after I delete the unwanted notice etc.) is quicker.

It's all a bit beyond me but at least the system is working albeit with a few extra unwanted steps in the process!

    Thank you Pete :)

Sorry for the very long delay in replying. Thank you, Pete. My Broadband Speed is2.2 Mbps. I've been a bit under the weather and my computer enthusiasm has waned a bit. I've decided to leave this problem alone as I can live with it - but I do appreciate all your help. I'm now working on my scanner problem - a different thread. Thank you, once again.

    Regards, Mary.
