Hi guys. Thanks ahead of time for any help you can provide. I'm sure you all know how terrifying the BSOD is!

    Info:
    Case: Kandalf LCS
    Processor: IntelCore2ExtremeQX6800
    Ram: 4GB,KingstonHyperX KHX6400D2LL/1G
    GPU: NvidiaGeForce8800GTX x2SLi
    HDD: 2x150GB Raptor10,000RPM
    Audio: AsusOnboard Audio HiDef
    Motherboard: AsusXtremeStriker
    OS: WIndows Vista Ultimate

    Problem:
BSOD, probable cause indicated as ntkrpamp.exe

    Possible Issues:
    (1) I used to encounter BSOD with the problem being p17.exe. People here indicated it might be my sound card (which was a soundblaster xtreme audio) and so i changed it to the onboard audio that came with my mobo. No p17.exe BSOD since.

    (2) I have two nvidia 8800 gtx cards installed, but I can't get sli to work. The option to have them operated on in SLi won't show up in the nvidia control panel. The second GPU is still installed though.

    (3) I've been on vacation for 3 months. I've got two temperature monitors on my CPU. Speedfan has
    Core1:31C
    Core2:25C
    Core3:28C
    Core4:25C

However PC Wizard (from the makers of cpu-z) has my CPU temps:
    Core1: 45C
    Core2: 40C
    Core3: 43C
    Core4: 40C
    CPU Voltage 1.312

I've been worried that my temperatures are too high. However I cannot find the page on intels website where it says what the danger temperature is for the intel quad core qx6800. I'm terrified of burning it out, but i don't know what the max temp allowed is.

I've got a liquid cooling system, which i recently refilled and checked to ensure there's proper flow. I think its going fine.

    (4) I had a BSOD a few days ago and the computer wouldn't restart. However I had just installed WIndow Blinds 5 (which alters lots of the graphics in windows) and uninstalling it stopped that problem.

    (5) I installed BioShock the game earlier today. Don't know if thats an issue considering the probable cause in the dump data indicated a hardware problem.

    Notes:

I was not actually doing anything intensive when i encountered the BSOD, just surfing the internet. Today is the first time i encoutered this particular BSOD.

    SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
    happening.
    Arguments:
Arg1: c0000005, The exception code that was not handled

The difference in the two temperature readouts attracts my attention. (They were carried out at the same time?) This usually (always in my experience), means the correct chipset drivers are not installed, unless it is a branded computer (Dell, HP, Gateway, etc) that may not use "normal" drivers or a full/complete BIOS.

Temperatures in the 40s I would not expect to be critical. Go into the BIOS/startup settings, there should be temperature readouts there (compare those to Speedfan and PC Wizard as soon as you get to the desktop) that will give you a guide to which is (most?) correct. Drivers would still be what I would concentrate on.

Look up the drivers for your motherboard at Asus (use the Global website), if there are no Vista drivers, get the 680i chipset drivers at nVidia:
    http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Get Vista drivers from the graphics manufacturer (or nVidia if they are not supplied at the manufacturer's website).

Basically, go through and find Vista drivers for all the hardware you have. Let me know if you need help.

Investigate the RAM. Try running one module at a time (you may need to read the motherboard manual for how it is to be located in the slots).

Has this only happened after the vacation? If so, I would pull out and reseat all the connections (drives, RAM, graphics, PCI). The connectors of cards can be cleaned with a soft pencil eraser.

    Matt
PS Check more dumps. Look for patterns.

thanks for the help mattman, i'll go through and try those things when i return from work today.

The temperatures were taken at the same time from the two programs, and when i restarted my computer the bios settings had only one temperature for my cpu and it was around 29C

This is not a branded computer, i actually bought the parts and put it together myself. Vista drivers have been a nightmare, i had to completely get rid of my creative soundblaster card, it was just incompatible.

    Uh? Creative Soundblaster. Check this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321637/en-us
I searched for the 7E stop message along with the C0000005 exception code.

    Quote from the dump:
Have you uninstalled any Creative software? Was the dump from before you removed the Creative card?

The dump may appear to think the soundcard is still installed

Good question. Actually, I couldn't find any creative files to uninstall. When i installed the drivers for the asus onboard audio ((btw on the asus extreme stirker the onboard audio is actually a pci card with a special slot for it)), anyway, when i installed the asus drivers, i just assumed they overwrote the creative installation files.

I couldn't find creative or soundblaster in the add/remove programs dialogue, but i did go to the Creative folder in Program Files and it was empty but for one file that stuck around.

Also i went to device manager, and under Sound it just has "SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio" nothing about creative.

So i assumed things were ok!

I uninstalled the creative card about a week ago, and the dump was yesterday, so the dump definately happened after the card was removed and software rewritten. Creative + Vista gave me nothing but BSOD's, so i had to break that up a week ago.

Ok I installed the chipset drivers from the nvdia website, i chose:

Platform Nforce Drivers -> 680i SLI/680i LT SLI

I'm posting two screenshots taken at the same time in both applications, and after i installed the new chipset drivers (but before restarting.) I think I'm making a mistake but I'm not sure.

    PC Wizard

    Speedfan:
    http://img513.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pic2wa8.jpg

In pcwizard i have one value saying my CPU temperature is 19C, but then each of the individual core temps is in the 40's.

Which one is the correct temperature? What mistake am i making?

i did some research and as far as i can see the max for my processor is 54.8C which means i'm pushing my luck since one of the cores in speedfan clocked in at 52C earlier today.

When i look up temperatures in the BIOS, it doesn't have four temps for each core like the software applications, it just has one CPU temperature thats usually closer to the range of the speedfan temps.

Thanks for any help you can provide

Let's not bang our heads to hard on the variation of temperature readouts. I might just ask though, if both of those programs are actual Vista versions. Also, they may need to be designed to work with the nVidia 680i chipset.

The crash dump would most certainly identify problems with the soundcard/s. Having software installed for one device and connecting a different device can cause all sorts of problems.
Note that I said software, this is different from the drivers. Software can modify the Windows audio controls/settings. It can add it's own player/ "control panel" and may (will?) only work the hardware it is designed for.
This should work(?) for drivers, it is a different matter for the software. The Asus installer probably adds controlling software as well as the drivers.

The audio control system seems to be "smoked ". You have installed things, installed over things and uninstalled things. If you cannot get them straightened out, run the installations again, then boot into Safe Mode and go to Control Panel -> Programs, find the uninstaller and run that. You can go to Device Manager and uninstall the listings under Audio, when you reboot into normal mode, if the Add New Hardware wizard runs, direct it to the Asus driver CD, otherwise click Cancel, then run the drivers CD when you get to the Windows desktop.

    Temperatures going up...
54*C seems very low for the CPU to get "cooked ". Unstable maybe. There should be alarm and shutdown settings in the BIOS, ALTHOUGH, check if the CPU has "thermal controls ", P4's did. These controls the speed of the CPU fan. How they may work with the water cooled system, I don't know.

Water cooling...are you looking for low noise or a better method of cooling? Either way, it seems the heat is not being "expelled" when the system is under load. You will need to find an improved way of removing the heat. For any method of cooling the heat has to be transferred to the air. Is the inside of the case is turning into an oven? If the system has an external radiator it seems to need more (cool) air circulating around it.

thanks for all the help mattman. I'll give it all a shot. I haven't had any repeats of the BSOD, not sure if the BSOD was a one time thing or if it had to do with updating the chipset drivers.

    Thanks again!

That's my best shot as well (for the moment). Maybe we will score :)

Let us know to the contrary. There are others here that have different areas of experience. They might see something.
