BSOD multiple times with different reasons

    Hi,

I have been having a lot of crashes over the last few days, particularly yesterday, but strangely none on the day of writing this post. Usually the BSOD indicates a problem with something called a BAD_POOL_HEADER. Other times it says IRQ_NOT LESS_OR EQUAL. And a few times it has said Windows will not boot up because the Windows installation itself is corrupt. However, trying again immediately after that message Windows boots up normally.

Can anyone advise me on the steps I need to take to track down this problem? I have tried downloading Microsoft's debugging tool but it won't install and complains about a missing or corrupt 'dbg.cab' file, whatever that is.

At first I thought these issues were because of a recent Java update to my machine, so I removed the Java update using add/remove programs. However the crashes continued after this. So I'm not convinced the Java update was to blame.

    Appreciate any help.

Hi, and thanks for the welcome. :)

I've tried using Data Dump Collection Tool. But that needs the Microsoft debugging tool as well it seems. There's a message on it saying 'debugging key not found- please install the tools (button above)'. When I attempt to install what it wants the install fails with this error.

I would uninstall and reinstall the debugging tools - your download may be corrupt.

I would start by running the manufacturer's disk diagnostic software .....

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

Check your memory out, noting .....
The only satisfactory way of testing RAM is to test the installed RAM in various configurations. If you have a single module swap it around the slots. If you have a pair of modules run each one singly, swapping between slots; then run them in pairs swapping between pairs of slots. If you have 2 sets of matched modules do not get them mixed up.

I would also check out the temps and voltages - download SIW and go to Hardware > Sensors

You may also want to run Driver Verifier. Please read these instructions BEFORE using it as it can cause a BSOD loop that won't let you into Windows:
More information on Drive Verifier here: Using Driver Verifier to identify issues with Windows drivers for advanced users

Hi, just thought I'd give an update on my BSOD problems. Strangely they haven't happened very frequently since the initial rush. In fact at the time of writing this post there hasn't been a crash for over a week. I haven't run driver verifier (find that prospect quite scary to be honest).

All I have done is update a driver for my creative extreme sound card. This isn't digitally signed by Microsoft, but since it's either use that or remove the card I don't have much choice. And I downloaded and installed Google Chrome instead of using Firefox 3.5

I know for sure the crashes did not occur until after the install of Firefox 3.5, since using Chrome there has only been one crash to BSOD. So for now my suspicions are leading to Firefox being the cause, or one of the causes.

To be honest I find it hard to believe that a web browser could give me that much trouble, and the creative sound card worked fine for months even with the previous driver.
